King Charles III Stays In High Spirits Despite Jolting Allegations From Prince Harry’s Memoir

Following the death of Prince Philip in April 2021, it was believed that King Charles III possibly planned to leave out one of his sons and daughter-in-law in his future monarchy plans. When Queen Elizabeth II became a widow, Charles took on more responsibility to help relieve her of some of her roles, and it was reported that his plans seemed to leave out both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Now that Charles is in the top spot of the royal family following his mother's passing, there is still tension between him and his youngest son, Prince Harry.

According to royal biographer Angela Levin, Charles planned to “ditch” Harry and Meghan Markle from the royal family. During an interview with talkRADIO in 2021, Levin addressed the “long-held plan to cut the size of the firm down.” She also explained how Charles and the late queen seemed to have different ideas on what to do regarding the future of the royal family.

“Prince Charles has wanted for a very long time to cut the monarchy down to save costs and to make people be worth the money that they got from the taxpayer,” Levin said. 

Charles and his son have had a rough relationship over the years, especially since Harry decided to remove himself from the royal family to live in the United States with his wife. With the release of Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” more revelations about the royal family have come to light, resulting in royal fans questioning whose side to believe. Over the years, more information about the relationship between royal family members has come to light. Harry and Meghan gave their side of the story in a bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview, as well as a Netflix documentary series. On Jan. 10, 2023, Harry released his tell-all memoir entitled “Spare,” where he divulged more about his life as a former working royal. The Duke of Sussex has been on a press spree, sharing more details about the book and his life.

One of the claims from “Spare” was that Harry asked Charles to not marry Camilla, Queen Consort. Previously, the Daily Mail had reported that Harry and Prince William were vehemently opposed to Camilla having the title of Queen Consort.

Royal author Robert Lacey explained, "(Charles is) fixated about it — something he never stops trying to negotiate with both of them. But they will never say 'Yes' to Camilla taking the place that should have been filled by their mother."  

Because Prince Harry and Prince William both have incredible involvement and attachment to their late mother Princess Diana’s legacy, it's understandable that the matter of witnessing their father remarry was a delicate one. The princes were 15 and 12 years old, respectively, when their mother died. This is part of the reason why Charles and Camilla waited to finally marry.

According to Express, royal biographer Penny Junor wrote in her 2005 book “The Firm:”

"A not insignificant part of the reason why they had waited until 2005 to announce their engagement was a sensitivity towards the boys. They didn’t want to foist a stepmother on William and Harry before they had fully grown up.”

ITV News reported that Harry called Camilla a “villain,” and that she had a “dangerous” relationship with the press. He claimed she forged a wrongful relationship with the press in order to rehabilitate her image. Harry once said he had a “pleasant” relationship with Camilla, but it seems like they are not on the best of terms any longer.

Another revelation from “Spare” was that William and Kate Middleton were in disbelief about Harry dating Meghan. Harry previously shared that his family made it apparent that they didn’t believe a “ginger could land such a beautiful woman.”

However, as TIME reported, William and Kate’s disbelief toward the relationship had more to do with their liking of Meghan as an actress on “Suits.”

The Duke of Sussex said he was “baffled” by their reaction “until Willy and Kate Explained that they were regular – nay, religious – viewers” of the show. He added, “All this time I’d thought Willy and Kate might not welcome Meg into the family, but now I had to worry about them hounding her for an autograph.”

Unfortunately, Harry and William have had troubles with one another over the years, and it doesn’t seem like the fab four are as tight as they once were.

Charles has shown a brave face during this time, as the BBC reported that he appeared to be in high spirits as he engaged with royal family fans in Norfolk, England, on Jan. 8, 2023. This was the first time the king was seen since details from “Spare” were made public, as allegations about the family were accidentally released earlier in Spain ahead of the publication date on Jan. 10, 2023.
