King Charles Has One Wish for His Sons Harry & William & Sources Say Harry's UK Return Is the Best Chance in Years to Make It Happen

King Charles has wanted many things in recent years — his cancer treatment to work, his relationship with Harry to heal, his grandchildren to know who he is. As Harry and Meghan prepare to move back to the United Kingdom with Archie and Lilibet, a source close to the royal household has told PEOPLE what the King wants now, with the rarest of opportunities finally within reach.

"[Charles] will want to see his sons together over time," the source said. "This is the best opportunity we have seen in recent years."

The wish is not new. It has been the quiet constant of everything Charles has done in his approach to the rift between William and Harry — the meetings at Clarence House, the Highgrove reunion with the Sussex family, the private conversations that preceded the announcement of the return. The King has understood that healing the relationship between his sons is not something he can force or schedule. But proximity helps. And for the first time in years, both of his sons will be living in the same country.

Harry, born Sept. 15, 1984, and William, born June 21, 1982, have not spoken, according to sources cited by PEOPLE, in any meaningful way since before Harry's UK visit in July 2026. They did not see each other during that trip. The last time they were photographed together was at King Charles's coronation in May 2023 — Harry sat two rows behind William and the two had no visible interaction. At Lord Robert Fellowes' Norfolk memorial in August 2024, they were seated separately and reportedly did not speak.

What has changed is geography. And Charles, by all accounts, is hoping geography does what everything else has not.

Sources close to William's circle are cautious. A source told Morning Honey that William and Catherine are resisting any "knee-jerk reaction" to Harry's return and that any reconciliation between the brothers would be "a slow build." The Prince of Wales has been described by royal insiders as significantly less willing than his father to move toward rapprochement. "William accepted Charles meeting Harry, given the concerns about the King's health," one palace insider told AOL. "But he isn't buying Harry's sudden charm act."

Catherine's position appears more nuanced. A separate source told AOL that she has "been so determined to support Harry's return" — a stance William reportedly finds uncomfortable.

For Charles himself, the PEOPLE source offered something closer to hope than expectation. "In time," they said, "there is a chance it will all heal."

The King is 77. He has been through cancer treatment, a coronation, a historic reunion with grandchildren he had not seen in four years, and now the news that his youngest son is moving home. He has said, in private, that he does not want his final years to be a misery. The wish he has carried quietly for years — that his sons will find their way back to each other — has not changed. What has changed is that for the first time since 2020, both of them will be in the same country, with children of their own who are growing up whether the adults in their lives choose to heal or not.

The opportunity is here. What comes of it is not yet written. But the source who spoke to PEOPLE put it plainly: this is the best chance in recent years. Charles, it seems, intends to use it.
