King Charles And Princess Kate Unite For Poignant Cancer Reception As Royal Diary Highlights Service And Duty

A royal day framed by service, health and public duty brought King Charles III, Queen Camilla and the Princess of Wales together at St James’s Palace on 2 June 2026. The reception marked the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research UK, a charity of which the King became patron in 2024. For the King and Catherine, Princess of Wales, the cause carried a deeply personal meaning: both publicly shared cancer diagnoses in 2024, and Catherine said in January 2025 that she was in remission.
The palace gathering recognised the work of researchers, clinicians, volunteers and charity partners involved in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. St James’s Palace, one of the monarchy’s most historic working palaces, regularly hosts receptions linked to royal patronages and public service.
The same day also placed Queen Camilla’s health-focused work in the spotlight. She opened the John King Brain Tumour Foundation Garden at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London. The charity supports the hospital’s Atkinson Morley Wing and has helped fund outdoor spaces designed to aid recovery and improve the hospital experience for patients with neurological conditions.
Beyond London, the royal diary stretched across Europe. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh continued a three-day visit to Portugal from 1 to 3 June 2026, marking the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor. In Denmark, King Frederik X and Queen Mary continued their 2026 summer cruise aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog, including a stop in Norddjurs Municipality.
The schedule reflected a broad royal theme: using ceremonial visibility to draw attention to health care, community service, diplomacy and the institutions that depend on public trust.

Princess Catherine arrived wearing a red Rodarte midi dress featuring a white heart print, paired with red Gianvito Rossi suede heels, a ruby pendant necklace, ruby and diamond earrings, and a red Miu Miu clutch — an all-red ensemble she had not worn publicly before. The look drew immediate attention online and from royal fashion observers who noted the visual boldness of the choice for an occasion with such personal resonance.
During the reception, she met with Sebastian Bowen, the husband of the late Deborah James — the journalist and cancer awareness advocate known as "BowelBabe" who died in June 2022 after living with incurable bowel cancer. James was awarded a damehood during a personal home visit from Prince William shortly before her death. The meeting was described by those present as warm and emotional.
Charles has spoken about the importance of openness around cancer on several previous occasions. At York Hospital, he told patients: "It's so important to be able to talk." His patronage of Cancer Research UK, taken on after his own diagnosis, has given those words a weight they would not otherwise carry.
The two have shared more than a public cause since 2024. Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith has spoken about the bond their shared experience created. "Obviously they have this in common and can only bring them closer," she told PEOPLE. "It is a source of reassurance and consolation for both of them."
