Kind Police Officer Offers To Babysit Energetic 2-Year-Old While Father Appears In Court

Being a parent is a full-time job, and sometimes that becomes a challenge when you need to do other important things, like appear in court. One dad from Orem, Utah, had a court date in 2016 but could not find a babysitter for his then 2-year-old daughter, so he did what had to be done and brought her to the courthouse with him. When it was time to enter the courtroom, the dad tried to bring his daughter along but was told that children were not allowed inside. Out of options, a kind police officer came to the man’s rescue and offered to watch the young girl while her father appeared in court.

The little girl had been busy walking up and down the hallway, and running back forth across the room while her dad waited for his turn to appear in court. The cop, Officer Norris, saw how much energy the 2-year-old had and it reminded him of his own children. He said that he knew what it was like to take rambunctious children out in public so he felt empathy for the father and wanted to help him out.

Officer Norris and the toddler walked together around the waiting room and drank plenty of water. After a while, the young girl got sleepy and sat in Officer Norris’s lap and watched cartoons on his phone until she fell asleep. When the father returned, he was very grateful for the babysitting, and the nap.

The entire encounter was recorded on the courthouse’s security footage. The officer and 2-year-old can be seen walking hand in hand and getting treats from other cops in the building. Keep reading to learn more about this heartwarming story.

The video footage of the police officer babysitting was shared on Facebook by the Orem Police Department. It has been viewed over three million times. The police department wrote in the video’s description:

“Officer Norris was waiting to testify in a hearing when he saw a very rambunctious two-year-old waiting with her father (Who also had a court case) in the lobby. The father had a court case scheduled and was unable to leave the little girl at home. When it was time for his case to be heard he tried to take his daughter into court with him. However, kids are not allowed in the courtroom for various reasons and the girl’s father didn't know what to do…”

Luckily, Officer Norris is also a dad and knew exactly what to do. The post continued:

“That was until Officer Norris offered to babysit for the man. You'll see from the court surveillance video that the little girl took to Officer Norris as he walked her around, getting drinks of water and treats from the Deputies at the front door. He pulled up some cartoons on his cell phone and the little girl climbed up onto his lap and she must've been worn out from all the running around she had done because she quickly fell asleep on Officer Norris' lap.”

Being a parent is a valuable job and really teaches you a lot, and Officer Norris was able to use his parenting skills at work to help a man in need. The Orem Police Department wrote,  “You can tell that Officer Norris is a father first and a police officer second!”
