Kind Man Saves Injured Baby Goose, And Now She Won't Leave His Side

Mike Jivanjee lives in Oregon on Lake Oswego. For Mike, being a friend of nature means a little more than it does to most people. Mike entered the water to rescue a goose a while back and now finds it difficult to get rid of his new friend. The goose, who Mike has named Kyle, visits on a daily basis and even approaches Mike when he is relaxing on his boat.

Mike was on the water one day when he saw a gosling struggling in the water. He thought it was likely the mother of the gosling had abandoned it so he did what he could to help the creature. He told CBS News, “At any minute she would have been run over by a boat.” Mike says the gosling was alone and very close to drowning. His first thought was to rescue the gosling and set it free. “I just figured I would keep it alive long enough to be an adult and to fend for itself,” he said. However, he realized the chances the gosling would survive on its own were not very good. He then made a decision that would change both of their lives forever.

Mike decided to become caretaker of the gosling, whom he decided to name 'Kyle.' He provided for the needs of Kyle until she was big enough to take care of herself. He did not restrict her from moving around voluntarily but provided her with care while she was allowed to move freely about the lake.

Telling CBS News Mike said, "I’ve tried to get rid of her, you know. I’ve driven her miles away and then left her in the middle of nowhere and when I come back she’s already home before me, so there’s not a lot we can do.”

Mike had no idea of the lifelong friendship he was forging at the time. When Kyle was big enough to leave the lake, the now full-grown goose decided to stay exactly where she was. Mike found that she would fly to him each time he walked outside. There was once a time she appeared while he was walking around in town.

Kyle comes to greet Mike every day and is often seen flying next to Mike's boat on the lake. Eventually, Kyle ended up having her own gosling; however, she was not a very good mother to the gosling as Mike saw Kyle leave the baby in the lake all by itself. So as history repeats itself, Mike ended up caring for the new gosling as well as naming it 'Jack.'

He told The Dodo, "Jack doesn't mind what we're doing as long as he's included. We're still waiting for feathers so he can fly. Until he can fly he is kind of defenseless. As soon as he takes flight my job is done." Mike went on to say that if there is anything people can learn from watching him and the geese its to just "be nice" to animals.
