Kind Man Saved An Abandoned German Shepherd. The Dog’s Reaction Tugged Viewers At The Heartstrings

Abandoned and lost pets always tug at our heartstrings. Their sadness and suffering make us aware of how fragile life is, and how compassion can make the difference between a lonely life and a new life with people who will love and cherish an animal.

This is a canal of the L.A. River. It runs for miles through steeply angled concrete walls that are nearly impossible to scale. This shepherd had somehow gotten trapped in there and was wandering around, trying to find his way out.

People came forward to offer assistance. Some tossed food down to the dog so he wouldn't starve. Others called Hope For Paws, which is a well-recognized animal rescue organization. Getting access to the riverbed was a problem in itself. It took several volunteers to help one man get through the fence and safely at the bottom of the canal.

Meanwhile, the dog paced slowly around, looking exhausted, depressed, and starved. The fact that he hung around showed that even in his condition, he decided to investigate. Perhaps he would take a chance with this stranger that had appeared.

The man faced the risk of getting hurt, but he was also worried that the dog might simply run away and become more lost than ever. He had to be exceptionally patient, to build a connection with the suffering animal under difficult conditions. He whistled and talked to the dog, who chose to stay in the vicinity - a good sign in itself.

The volunteer managed to give the dog some food and some gentle scratches around the head. The dog seemed to respond to this deeply. He was used to belonging to someone and clearly missed human interaction. The man got him inside a cage which then had to be dragged up the side of the wall and over the fence.
