Because reality TV star Kim Kardashian and artist Kanye West lead such colorful lives, it’s a surprise to discover the home they shared when they were married was almost devoid of color and had a minimalist style. After renovations to the Calabasas McMansion they bought for $20 million in 2014, the couple opened the doors to the media for an inside look into their perfect home.
Before their divorce in 2021, Kardashian and West were one of the most famous couples in the entertainment industry. The press and fans went into a frenzy when news the pair had started dating in 2012, after Kardashian’s second 72-day marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries. The media circus went into overdrive when the couple married in May 2014 at Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy. Interest in the pair’s personal life increased exponentially, and everything from their private conversations to date nights was documented and even filmed for the TV star’s show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.”
The couple also faced their share of controversy and scandal. Some of the most notable include West’s erratic behavior on Twitter targeting other artists, his feud with pop darling Taylor Swift, his hospitalization for exhaustion in 2016 and his unlikely friendship with then-president Donald Trump, all of which Kardashian was forced to defend.
However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the glamorous pair. In their time together, they had four children – North, Chicago, Saint and Psalm. As parents, Kardashian and West were determined to care for their children well, and this included building the perfect home where they could feel comfortable and safe. Read on to find out how they transformed a 15,000-square-foot mansion into their dream home.

Kardashian and West first spied the house on a jaunt through the neighborhood in 2013. Kardashian told Architectural Digest in 2020, “We passed by this incredibly extravagant house while strolling through the neighborhood. I’d just had North, and we were doing a lot of walking so I could work off some of the baby fat. I didn’t really know Kanye’s style at that point, but I thought the house was perfection.”
They enlisted the aid of renowned Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt, among others, to remodel the house. After its completion, it hardly looked like the same house. Gone were the wooden cabinets, floors and ceiling detailing, as well as furnishing typical of such a sprawling home. Instead, the interior was remodeled into bare and monochromatic rooms in shades of white and beige. One large, empty hallway looked reminiscent of a church, with its high, arched ceilings. According to Kardashian, the simplicity of the house was a conscious decision. “The one thing Kanye and I had in common was our preference for a neutral palette. I love the simplicity of the design. Everything in the outside world is so chaotic. I like to come into a place and immediately feel the calmness,” she said. She also once described her home as a “minimal monastery.”
While the sparseness of the house doesn’t quite fit the image of the most kid-friendly space, Kardashian and West believed otherwise. “The kids ride their scooters down the hallways and jump around on top of the low Axel tables, which they use as a kind of stage. This house may be a case study, but our vision for it was built around our family,” West said, with Kardashian supporting him to add: “In the end, we don’t take it too seriously. We’re not going to be fanatics.”

Kardashian gave fans glimpses into her home in a series of photos on Instagram alongside the caption, “The cover of @archdigest is something I have always dreamed of. Here is a glimpse of our minimal style and a pic of North’s room if you swipe!” The pictures showed sparsely furnished white and beige rooms filled with lights, a few tables and chairs and almost nothing else. However, the last photo in the series was a stunning departure from the rest.
The photo showed her daughter North’s room, which was decorated from top to bottom in pink. The walls, dressers, mirrors, floor and even the bedsheets were all the same shade of dusty pink. The immense headboard styled to look like a giant butterfly was also in the same color. It seems while Kardashian and West have a penchant for white and creams, they are happy to let their children get a little colorful.
Also, in contrast to the rest of the house is an immense playroom for the children. In a video she filmed in response to critics, the proud mom showed off the large – and colorful – collection of toys her children play with. “You guys always say my house is so minimal — well, you guys haven’t seen my playroom,” she said as the camera panned around the room to show a basket full of ukuleles and karaoke microphones, Takashi Murakami cushions, a dollhouse, toy horses and dinosaurs. Also included were some remarkable features, such as a slide that falls into a ball pen, a cash register that can actually ring up items, and a mini stage with a drum set for the kids to hold some adorable musical performances.
And with that, Kardashian proved that, even in their minimalist house, there’s always some room for a pop of color.
