Health officials have been encouraging people to stay at least six feet away from others in order to help curb the transmission of the coronavirus. Many celebrities have been posting their support online to motivate people and show solidarity. Kevin Bacon, one of Hollywood's most prolific actors, posted a video on March 18, reminding people that we are all more interconnected than we think, starting his "6 Degrees" campaign.

Kevin Bacon has been in many, many films. So many, in fact, that back in 1994 a group of students formulated the theory that he might be the center of the entertainment universe. Out of their theory, the game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" was born. This "game" had simple rules: find out the shortest path of association between a random actor and Kevin Bacon by comparing films the actors have been in. For a quick example: Elvis Presley starred in Change of Habit (1969) with Edward Asner. Asner starred in JFK (1991) with Bacon. So Elvis' Bacon number would be 2, Asner's is 1.

The game takes its name and idea from the six degrees of seperation theory, which states that all people on earth are, nowadays, only about 6 steps of association away from each other. Bacon himself knows about the theory and the game. Referencing both, he started his video with the words: “Hi, folks. You know me, right? I’m technically only six degrees away from you.”
Bacon went on to add:
“Right now, like people around the world, I’m staying home, because it saves lives and it is the only way we’re going to slow down the spread of this coronavirus. Because the contact that you make with someone, who makes contact with someone else, that may be what makes somebody’s mom or grandpa or wife sick.”
Bacon ended his video by asking that everybody should post about who they are staying home for. He held up a sign, stating that he was staying home for his wife, who, like the 61-year-old actor, is within the age span of those more likely to suffer more severe symptoms of the virus.
