Ripa then went on to say her son never cared about the money her son would receive every Halloween from his grandparents, although this fact has changed since he started living on his own.

"Now that he's living on his own, he's called three times, 'Halloween envelope arrived?' Just so he can have electricity. He's experiencing being an adult," said Ripa.

The comments have since sparked controversy, with many believing the term “extreme poverty” to be inappropriate to use about somebody who very obviously comes from a financially comfortable family.

The 49-year-old also said she is “concerned” about her two eldest kids Michael and Lola studying in New York, where the lived their whole lives.

"We drop him off at his dorm. We have lunch together. We look at each other. We say, 'We did it. We have a child in college. We did it! Oh my gosh,'" she recounted of dropping Michael off to school in his freshman year. "We come home. It's about 10 minutes away. We walk through the front door and he is standing in the hallway."
