Kelly Clarkson Gets Honest About Her Strict Social Media Rule For Her Children

Kelly Clarkson has lived most of her adult life in the public eye, but as a mother, she is far more focused on what her children experience behind closed doors. At 43, the singer and talk show host continued to raise her two young kids after the tragic passing of her ex-husband and the father of her children.

The singer and television host, born in 1982, is the mother of daughter River Rose, born in 2014, and her son, Remington “Remy” Alexander, born in 2016. Clarkson shared her children with her former husband, Brandon Blackstock, who died of cancer at age 48 in August 2025. The news of his passing deeply affected the family. A source close to the situation noted that Clarkson was “heartbroken” for their children, acknowledging the complicated but meaningful history she shared with Blackstock.

The source explained, “Kelly and Brandon had their ups and downs, but at the end of the day, he was the father of her children and she is absolutely heartbroken for them.” Another insider shared that Blackstock had been privately battling cancer for three years, and Clarkson remained steadfast in protecting their kids emotionally throughout the ordeal.

The source said: “When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake.”

Through grief and change, Clarkson has continued to prioritize River and Remy, drawing strength from her role as their mother. But her role isn’t without its challenges, one of them being social media. Clarkson has been candid about the pressures she faced after becoming famous at 20, when she won the first season of “American Idol.” Since then, she has been the subject of relentless commentary, ranging from her weight to her relationships. As her children grow older, she is keenly aware that they could also become targets simply because of who their mother is.

That awareness has led Clarkson to take a firm stance on technology and online access. She believed setting boundaries early was essential, and has made it clear that protecting her children’s emotional well-being mattered more to her than convenience or popularity.

She explained her reasoning more directly in a 2024 interview, where she addressed how social media could affect children, especially those growing up with famous parents.

“That can be really hard on kids in general, but especially kids with parents in the public eye,” Clarkson told People Magazine in an interview.

“So I have informed them they’re not allowed to, under my roof, ever have (it).”

Her rule was straightforward. No social media accounts until her children turned 18. While she acknowledged it sounded strict, Clarkson said she saw it as a necessary layer of protection. She revealed she had already encountered pushback at home, particularly from her daughter, who questioned whether the rule applied everywhere.

Clarkson also pushed back against the idea that firm rules make her overly controlling. She described herself as far from a “helicopter mom,” emphasizing that she encourages independence and curiosity. At the same time, she was unapologetic about being present and setting boundaries.

“There’s no perfect parent; I’m definitely screwing up my children somehow,” she said. “But I’m doing my best.”

She added that her stance was not necessarily permanent. As her children grow older, she said the issue remains open to discussion, but only if they can make a convincing case for why social media would be healthy for them.
