Kelly Clarkson offered an emotional and heartfelt performance when she altered the lyrics of her hit “Piece by Piece,” shifting the focus away from resentment over her divorce from Brandon Blackstock. In footage posted online, the 43-year-old singer became visibly emotional several times as she introduced the updated rendition of the track.
Blackstock passed away from cancer on Aug. 7, 2025, at age 48. He and Clarkson shared two children – daughter River, 11, and son Remington, 9 – and he was also father to daughter Savannah and son Seth from a prior relationship. The day before his passing, Clarkson announced she would be postponing the remainder of her Las Vegas shows. In a statement, she explained: “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them.”
According to a source who spoke with PEOPLE, Clarkson has “been devastated” for her children during her ex-husband’s illness.
“When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake,” the insider said, adding, “Kelly has always tried to keep things classy. It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well. She’s been devastated for the kids.”
Just under two weeks before Blackstock’s death, Clarkson connected deeply with her audience during her Las Vegas Studio Session residency. Her reimagined performance of “Piece by Piece” offered fans a glimpse into her grief, compassion, and commitment to shielding her children during an intensely private family struggle.
The video posted on TikTok by @modestishottest4u, filmed during Kelly Clarkson’s Las Vegas residency on July 26, 2025, shows the singer visibly emotional, wiping away tears and working hard to maintain composure. At one point, she even gave herself a pep talk: “Compartmentalization!”

Clarkson then explained that after first updating the lyrics to “Piece by Piece” in 2023, following her 2020 divorce from Blackstock. In detail, she revised the track yet again to better align with her current outlook.
“I’ve never rewritten a song more and I probably never will,” she told the crowd.
Clarkson continued:
“I wrote this song with a lot of hope and projection for happiness and better than what was happening. And then, well, life set in and I had to change the lyrics. Everybody was like, ‘Wait, why aren’t you singing this song?’ And I was like, ‘Have you heard the lyrics?’ That’s fun. Embarrassing.”
The original 2015 version was written as a message to her estranged father, portraying Blackstock as a supportive partner and father figure. Clarkson noted:
“I ended up changing the lyrics. We did it one time, I did a residency here, and then I was like, ‘You know what, that sounded a little angry.’ So I just wanted to explain how it feels now. I’m 43. I’ve done some therapy, and I changed the lyrics now and I think it’s perfect. I promise. I’m not gonna change it again.”
She further explained:
“It just represents, kind of, I don’t know I feel like we grow up, right? And this is the more grown up version of it.”
Becoming emotional once more, she told the audience, “I’m really trying to pull it together,” before introducing the performance with, “Screw it, let’s just sing it. This is ‘Piece by Piece.’”
In 2023, she had performed the version containing:
“I just walk away, when they ask for money…”
In her most recent update, she now sings:
“I’m learning everyday how to love me. I let go of the shame that you taught me. Piece by piece I restored the faith that a heart can still beat even if it breaks.”
