Clarkson’s TV show, “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” which airs on NBC, includes a segment called “Kellyoke” which sees the singer cover a classic track from another artist or band.

On an episode that aired this past November in 2020, Clarkson sang a cover of the hit song "Need You Now" by Lady A. Her version was full of emotion and viewers felt heartbroken watching it. When the performance was uploaded to YouTube, many fans left comments praising Clarkson.

"By the end of this cover I just wanna go and give her a hug," one viewer wrote. Another person said, "Omg was expecting her to take on the original arrangement but this one is waayyyy more heart-breaking."

A lot of viewers confessed that they actually enjoyed Clarkson's cover more than the original because it was performed more in a soulful ballad style:

One person said, "Okay.....this just got better than the original!" Another said, “It's not just that she can sing anything, it's that she can sing anything extremely well. This one made my heart break a little.” And someone else followed with, “WOW! She just did that! ‘Lady K’ just slammed it out of the park! Absolutely breathtaking incredible!”

Wearing a pretty striped skirt, casual t-shirt, and jacket ensemble, Clarkson stood on the stage in front of the microphone. She was accompanied by a pianist on a grand piano in the background as she delivered her performance.

"Need You Now" was performed by the band Lady A, who used to go by the name of Lady Antebellum. The country music group hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, is made up of members Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood. They co-wrote the song with Josh Kear and produced it with Paul Worley. It was the lead single and title track to their second studio album, which was also called “Need You Now.” It was released in the US on August 11, 2009.

The album "Need You Now" debuted at No. 1 on both the pop and country charts in America. The song of the same name was a massive success, seeing it win four Grammy Awards in 2011, including song of the year and record of the year, reports Discover Music. In 2011, "Need You Now" replaced Taylor Swift's "Love Story" as the best-selling country song of all time in the US. It takes a lot to knock Taylor Swift off a top spot!

The "Kellyoke" segment has become one of the most viewed and enjoyed parts of Clarkson’s show. Her “kellyokes” have become so popular that people are calling for them to become their own album or concert.

One viewer said: “She could probably do a concert series with all the covers.” Another said: “With all these kellyokes alone, Kelly should be bringing home more Grammys! excitedly waiting for her new album though...”

According to PEOPLE, she also recently smashed Justin Bieber’s “Sorry.” So who knows, with all these incredible covers, Clarkson may even decide to release some of them as her own versions!

Clarkson was the winner of American Idol back in 2002 and ever since then she has taken the music charts by storm and has become a firm household name. Although the massive audience of over 22 million people watched her win the show, she revealed to Country Rebel:

“I just wanted to sing…My initial goal actually even when I was little, wasn’t to be the frontrunner. I wanted to be a backup singer. I am so happy we have Madonna, and Britney and Beyonce–y’all just live it up. I wanna be, like, right underneath.”

Clarkson has always been known to wear her heart on her sleeve. Sometimes the emotion from her private life comes out into her music. According to PEOPLE, she revealed:

“When I got upset when I was a kid I had a problem saying how I felt and my mom told me to start writing. And that's actually how I get my feelings out, so I probably won't speak about it too much but you definitely will hear it musically.”

And everyone certainly heard and felt it musically with this cover!
