Kelly Clarkson Calls Out NYC Store After Getting A ‘Pretty Woman’ Treatment

Kelly Clarkson knows what it feels like to walk into a store expecting a great shopping experience and leave with a very different story to tell.

The 44-year-old singer recently shared a frustrating experience at a New York City store, recalling how an employee made her feel judged before she could even make a purchase.

In a post on X on Saturday, Oct. 10, Clarkson explained that she had driven all the way to Brooklyn after spotting a store she thought looked “really rad.” She already had several items in mind, but the visit quickly took an unexpected turn.

According to Clarkson, an employee seemed to assume she couldn't afford the merchandise and offered to find her something comparable instead.

The experience reminded her of a memorable scene from the 1990 romantic comedy “Pretty Woman,” starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

In the film, Roberts plays Vivian Ward, who visits an upscale boutique only to have a salesperson refuse to show her the more expensive clothes. Vivian later returns to the store dressed in designer outfits and carrying shopping bags, delivering one of the movie’s most memorable lines to the employee who dismissed her.

Clarkson invoked that scene when recounting her own shopping experience, making it clear she was unhappy with how she had been treated. The singer rarely shares personal details on social media, generally keeping her private life away from the spotlight. But this particular encounter was frustrating enough for her to speak out publicly.

While Clarkson's post drew attention to the experience, it also came at a time when the singer was navigating major changes in her life and career.

Clarkson moved to New York City in fall 2023 and has occasionally shared glimpses of her life there. In recent months, she has also made major decisions about how she wants to spend her time outside of music.

In February, she announced that “The Kelly Clarkson Show” would end after seven seasons, saying she wanted to prioritize her children, daughter River Rose, 11, and son Remington Alexander, 10, after their father, Brandon Blackstock, died.

Clarkson expressed gratitude to the people who had helped make the daytime show a success, including her band, crew, guests, viewers and NBC. Clarkson remains active in music and television. She is currently a coach on the 30th season of “The Voice,” alongside Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green.

But her recent shopping trip offered a more personal glimpse of the singer's life offstage.

In her X post, Clarkson said she had arrived at the Brooklyn store intending to buy several things. Instead, she felt the employee had judged her ability to afford the merchandise and suggested she look for comparable alternatives.

She then named the store and encouraged her followers to visit if they wanted to experience the same kind of treatment Vivian received in “Pretty Woman.”

The reference was pointed. In the film, Vivian eventually confronts the saleswoman who refused to help her, reminding her of the costly mistake she made by underestimating a customer.

Clarkson's response was just as direct, as she made it clear the store had lost a customer ready to spend. “Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale,” she wrote.

In an Instagram post, the store explained their side of the story, saying: “We’ve reached out to Kelly directly to try and clear the air. We really do wish her the best and hope that someday we can all laugh about this misunderstanding.” However, Clarkson’s fans were unfazed and backed her up in the comments.
