Keith Urban Puts On Drive-In Concert For Medical Workers On Frontlines —' We Say Thank You'

Many musicians have still been performing on social media during the coronavirus pandemic, but especially country musician Keith Urban, who was one of the first to stage virtual concerts over Instagram.

Now, he's taken it one step further by staging a drive-in concert for frontline healthcare workers outside of Nashville. Taking place on May 14, the 200+ attendees—including Keith's wife Nicole Kidman—responsibly distanced from each other at the Stardust Drive-In Theatre, and the show still went on.

A keen performer in every sense of the word, Keith Urban hasn't let the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing rules keep him from doing what he loves the most—performing music. Back in March when the rules were first enforced, Urban was quick to stage concerts in his basement, with only his wife Nicole Kidman in attendance. He streamed the concerts on Instagram and even gave them a name, "Urban Underground."

Now, after two months of social distancing, and with the end not in sight, Keith has taken his love for performing one step further. On May 14, the musician staged a special performance that he called "Urban Underground: Drive-In," which took place at the Stardust Drive-In Theatre just outside of Nashville.

Created as a thank you to frontline healthcare workers, the audience in attendance consisted of over 200 doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, and staff from nearby hospitals. They all set up with their cars at a safe distance and were even able to set up chairs next to their vehicles and enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime performance.

The hour-long-event was the "first outdoor concert in the country since isolation guidelines came into play earlier this year," according to People magazine. They also reported that as Urban took to the stage he thanked everybody, stating: "To all of you guys here tonight, for everything that you've done, and continue to do, to all of your families, we say thank you—this concert is for all of you."

People added that Urban said he staged the event as a thank you to healthcare workers putting their lives on the line every day, and that he thought it would be a great opportunity for everyone to have a little fun. He added: "I'm a musician, I have to play!"

Nicole Kidman posted about the event on her Instagram, including clips of the show, and captioned the post: "@KeithUrban just had to play!! Isolating with live music at last night's first #UrbanUnderground drive-in gig for the incredible #frontline workers at @VanderbiltHealth ❤️xx"

While the full concert hasn't been made public, Urban included a short video that chronicles the event's setup and performance on his YouTube page. Here's hoping he releases it in full in the future.
