History was made during the third episode of American Idol Season 18 when Courtney Timmons was brought up to the audition room by host Ryan Seacrest despite her missing the deadline. Ryan spotted the 22-year-old security guard from Harris Neck, GA sitting outside the building on the stoop, so he decided to make an exception for her. Following her pitch-perfect rendition of Andra Day's Rise Up, Ryan’s eyes filled up with tears and Katy proclaimed, “You’re probably the best singer we’ve seen today.”

Indeed, the two judges got emotional as a contestant did something unique that has never been seen in the program's history. That Sunday, many singers from around the globe were auditioning, hoping to earn a ticket to Hollywood. Seacrest then brought an ambitious singer to the auditions from the streets.

Courtney was a 22-year-old security guard who had the ambitions of venturing into the music industry and becoming a great singer. However, her hopes were shattered, and she waited outside the American Idol production area having in mind that she had missed her opportunity of auditioning for the series.

Seacrest met her outside stranded, and Timmons shared her story with him. After learning that Timmons had the dream of auditioning for the show, he chose to make a bold move and help her out. Seacrest told her the solution to her problem was to take her on stage and let the judges decide her fate. Seacrest told her that he could not promise her breakthrough since he had not talked with the judges. Thus, it was upon the judges' will to say no to her face, which was probably harder.

Seacrest kept her promise and took Timmons to the elevator and up to meet the judges. Seacrest explained Timmons's situation to the other judges, including the fact that no single person had heard her sing. Richie was shocked at that point and thought that Seacrest was joking. Furthermore, they were not sure of what to make of the present situation.

Later, all the judges gave in and agreed to give her a chance to audition, and what happened next was remarkable. The 22-year-old security guard belted out Rise Up in a pitch-perfect rendition, Andra Day's anthemic song, and the judges just watched her with amazement. Filled with tears, Katy acknowledged her for being the best singer they had seen in the show that day.

Ryan, on the other hand, was also moved with emotions as tears rolled down her face in a sign of amazement. Katy then interjected Ryan and claimed that she had seen Courtney outside on the sidewalk and assumed her. She thought Courtney was just a fun of the show who came to watch others audition.

Lionel then interrupted Katy and claimed that the lady was not singing. According to him, there is a vast difference between singing and "sanging." And the young lady did the latter, and that's how perfect she was. Katy then called Timmons surprise audition a surprise moment and gave her the Hollywood ticket on the spot without voting.

Timmons's ability to make Seacrest and Katy shed tears was unique as the two had little emotional feelings. After the episode was aired, Seacrest took to social media and posted a clip of the powerful moment. On the clip, he added a short, quite claiming of how Courtney was great and how she made him cry.
