Katey Sagal Opens Up About Becoming a Mother at 52 and the Ultimatum She Gave Her Husband Before It Happened

Katey Sagal had a lot of things to say on Ted Danson's podcast "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" — but the story that landed most immediately was the one about the five minutes.
When Sagal, born Jan. 19, 1954, met her husband Kurt Sutter at a 12-step recovery meeting in 2001, he made his position on children immediately clear. "When we met, he was like, 'I don't wanna have any kids,'" Sagal told Danson. "And I was like, 'Okay, 'cause I have about five minutes left if you wanna have kids.'"
She was in her late forties. She knew the window was narrowing. She did not push — she simply stated the reality, with the direct humor that has always defined how she talks about her own life. The ball was in Sutter's court.
Several years passed. Sutter, born March 30, 1960, and six years Sagal's junior, changed his mind. "About five years in, we started really talking about it, and so we did the whole surrogate process," Sagal said. In 2007, when Sagal was 52, their daughter Esmé Louise Sutter was born.
"This is Esmé, my sweet Esmé, who's 19," Sagal told Danson, laughing. "She's my favorite right now. Kids, I love you all."
Sagal also shares two older children — Sarah Grace White, 31, a musician, and Jackson White, 30, an actor known for "Tell Me Lies" on Hulu — from her marriage to drummer Jack White, who died in July 2024. In October 1991, Sagal experienced a stillbirth with a daughter named Ruby at almost eight months — a loss she has spoken about on multiple occasions, and one that gave the eventual arrival of Esmé a particular weight.
Five minutes was all the time it took to set everything in motion.

The podcast appearance offered several other candid disclosures from Sagal — now 72, still working, and apparently still very much herself about all of it.
Her children, she said, would prefer she took a break. "Their only thing to me is, 'Mom, you've been working for so many years, why don't you just chill for a while?'" she told Danson. Her response was characteristically Sagal. "You guys, I like to work. That is chill for me. I don't like all the downtime. And I don't really know what else I would do."
She has kept her children informed throughout her career — and has been rewarded for it with their enthusiasm. "They're really proud," she said. "They're the first ones I call when I get a good job." She described her eldest daughter Sarah's music career warmly: "My oldest daughter has made the most beautiful record that she wrote and produced. She's amazing."
When Danson asked what he should know about her, Sagal's answer surprised him. "I'm very sexual, Ted," she said. "I'm at this age of my life and still into it." Danson replied that he was "the exact opposite" — though he stressed he remained "madly in love" with his wife of 31 years, actress Mary Steenburgen. The exchange was, like most things on the podcast, warm, funny, and entirely unguarded.
Sagal has been married to Sutter since 2004. She told him she had five minutes left. He took five years to decide. In the mathematics of this particular love story, it all worked out exactly right.
