The love story of Jack and Rose from the iconic film “Titanic” will go down in history as one of the most passionate yet tragic fictional romances of all time. Although that story sadly ended as the film credits rolled in 1997, the relationship between the actors who brought the characters to life has continued to live on.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio famously played lovers for James Cameron’s “Titanic,” and have remained incredibly close friends ever since. Winslet is most famously known for her work in independent films and period dramas, portraying strong, stubborn characters. She has gone on to receive plenty of prestigious awards throughout her career, cementing herself as a stand-out actress. Some of her most famous films include “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Finding Neverland” and “The Reader.”
DiCaprio, on the other hand, took a while to receive his first-ever Oscar, but has proved time and again that he is a well-accomplished and talented actor. Some of his most notable films include “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” “Inception,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Revenant.”
Throughout their 25 years of friendship, Winslet and DiCaprio have continued to explain just how much they appreciate each other, and enjoy any time they are able to spend together. In December 2021, Winslet opened up about her most recent reunion with the fellow actor, which left her feeling very emotional, as she had been away from her dear friend for quite a bit of time. Read on to find out more about the pair’s friendship and their heartfelt reunion.

After being friends for more than two decades, it’s safe to say that Winslet and DiCaprio have a beautiful, unbreakable bond and will hopefully be able to be in each other’s lives for as long as possible. According to TODAY, Winslet and DiCaprio first formed a beautiful friendship on the set of “Titanic,” which was the highest-grossing movie of all time prior to the release of another Cameron film, “Avatar.”
The pair shared some wonderful memories together during their time filming “Titanic.” “I turned 21 on that shoot, and Leo turned 22,” Winslet told The Guardian. However, DiCaprio had been miserable during parts of the intensive production the film went through. Winslet explained, “I remember! I remember that he was! It wasn’t pleasant for any of us, but we were all in it together. Though he had way more days off than I ever bloody did.”
She added, “I guess I was raised to be grateful and just get on with it. I didn’t feel it was my right to be miserable, and if I was miserable I certainly would not have let a journalist know. There is no way I would have let that slip!”
Winslet and DiCaprio have been linked ever since, and even played romantic partners once again years down the line. In 2008, the set of friends starred as husband and wife in the movie “Revolutionary Road,” which ended up earning Winslet the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama – one of the many awards that the actress has received over the course of her career.

Perhaps one reason the relationship between the pair has remained so strong was that it had a strong foundation in friendship and was never complicated by anything more. Winslet told Elle in 2017:
"It was seven months of very intense work, we were both really very young. And luckily, and this was the fortunate thing, we never fancied each other!”
She said it may seem difficult for hard-core “Titanic” fans to wrap their heads around, but it was for the better.
"I know that's really annoying to hear, sorry. We really never did. So it did mean that we were able to have this… be able to tease each other, which we still do, which is really amazing," she added.
Winslet said she was taken by surprise when, even years after “Titanic,” she and DiCaprio had retained the bond they established in the disaster epic.
“I hadn’t realized how much my chemistry with him since ‘Titanic’ would still stick,” Winslet told Entertainment Weekly. ”It’s great to discover we can just slip right into it, like muscle memory.”
She also told the publication it was initially awkward for her to film intimate scenes with DiCaprio on “Revolutionary Road,” but only because the movie’s director was her husband at the time, Sam Mendes.
“I just kept saying, ‘This is too f******g weird,’” Winslet recalled. ”And Leo was like, ‘Oh, get over it.’ And I’m going, ‘Yeah, a little reminder: You’re my best friend. He’s my husband. This is a bit weird.’”
Winslet and Mendes divorced in 2011. They share one son, Joe Alfie, who was born in 2003.

One of the most famous and adored reunions between Winslet and DiCaprio occurred in 2016 when they met up with each other on the red carpet at the Oscars. Later that evening, Winslet was seen showing her pure joy for her friend as DiCaprio took home his first ever Academy Award for his outstanding performance in “The Revenant.” The following year, the pair was publicly spotted together again – this time for DiCaprio’s annual auction gala in Saint-Tropez, France, for his foundation, according to TODAY.
After not being able to see each other for a pretty long time due to the ongoing pandemic, Winslet and DiCaprio were finally able to reunite in Los Angeles, California, in December 2021. Winslet had been living in England, while DiCaprio had been busy working in the United States, including on the 2021 release of “Don’t Look Up.”
According to TODAY, Winslet was overcome with emotions when she was finally face-to-face with her long-time friend, as the pair had spent three years apart from one another. Thankfully, the previous co-stars were finally able to get back together, and made sure to cherish every single moment they had with each other.
Speaking with The Guardian, Winslet said:
“I couldn’t stop crying. I’ve known him for half my life! It’s not as if I’ve found myself in New York or he’s been in London and there’s been a chance to have dinner or grab a coffee and a catch-up. We haven’t been able to leave our countries.”
Winslet added, “Like so many friendships globally, we’ve missed each other because of Covid. He’s my friend, my really close friend. We’re bonded for life.”
