Kate Winslet Promotes 'Natural Beauty' Because Plastic Surgery 'Goes Against All' Of Her 'Morals'

The English actress, Kate Winslet, is known for her period dramas, the portrayal of complex female characters, and independent films. Her most popular role and the film that made her a household name was "Titanic" in which she starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Winslet is the recipient of an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, three British Academy Film Awards and five Golden Globe Awards. 

Winslet began her career at age 15 when she appeared on the British television series "Dark Season." Her film debut came in 1994 with the movie "Heavenly Creatures." A year later, she took home a BAFTA for her performance as Marianne Dashwood in "Sense and Sensibility." After she sky-rocketed to worldwide fame in 1997 with "Titanic," Winslet began to receive more roles in blockbuster films. 

The actress has had a whirlwind career, as well as a tumultuous love life. She was first married to Jim Threapleton, who worked as assistant director on the set of the film "Hideous Kinky." Winslet fell for him, and they were married in 1998. Sadly, their love was not meant to be, and they divorced in 2001. Winslet's second marriage was to Sam Mendes, another director. They got married in 2003 and divorced in 2011. Winslet has been married to Edward Abel Smith since 2012. 

From 1997s "Titanic" to 2021s "Mare of Easttown," the actress has had a career worth standing applause. With ups and downs like any career, it is no secret that Hollywood can wear on a person both mentally and physically. 

In interviews with The Telegraph from 2011 and 2021, Winslet has repeatedly admitted that she's struggled with her image but, regardless, takes a strong stance when it comes to cosmetic surgery and natural beauty. Unlike other celebrity women, Winslet has sung a different tune when it comes to staying young and relevant in the world of entertainment. As an advocate of natural beauty, Winslet told The Telegraph, "It goes against all my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty," when it comes to plastic surgery. 

Having acted in her iconic movie, "Titanic" at a young age, Winslet told The Guardian, "I turned 21 on that shoot, and Leo turned 22," she said. Then speaking to Oprah Winfrey on her titular show in 2004, Winslet revealed, "I remember Leo when we were doing 'Titanic' saying to me, 'You know it's really important that you are the shape that you are." Cheat Sheet reported that Winslet continued, "I was like 'Well what do you mean by that?'" 

She added:

"It was kind of a really out-of-the-blue conversation that we had in the middle of shooting. He said 'Because there's so many skinny girls out there who think that to be successful and to be beautiful and therefore to be loved and respected, it means you have to be thin.'"

In the entertainment industry, there is an extreme emphasis on a woman's body type and weight, and it can be challenging for women who do not fit the "industry standard." Winslet said that "this kind of really struck a chord with me. I thought, 'He's really right actually.' And that in some way this image is being translated to teenage girls." Winslet has been an admirable public figure for young females to look up to due to her stance on cosmetic surgery.

Recently, the award-winning actress revealed to The Telegraph that she is focusing on roles that allow her to look like a normal woman. "I have to say there's a myth around famous Hollywood women that they kind of look perfect all the time," she said. 

"For me, playing Mare was almost an opportunity to cut through that myth and show that this is just a real person, a real mother juggling real life. I definitely feel more compelled now to make sure that the characters I play look relatable and accessible."

The actress who played a smalltown detective went on to explain, "There's no way this woman cares about what she looks like anymore, there are days when she doesn't even know how she's going to get through the day because of the grief that she feels. It was crucial that she just couldn't wear loads of make-up. But we added to my eyebrows at the outer corners because my own eyebrow shape." 

In terms of her skincare regime? Check out her statement, "We can't deny our age, but we can defy our years by doing what we can to keep our skin boosted and hydrated,' she told The Telegraph. "I do think anti-aging treatments are fantastic. If the product says that it helps with fine lines, then it bloody better do its job. I'm not one for huge rituals or multiple products. I just always wash my face with loads of cold water in the morning because I find that it takes any puffiness down and keeps the pores nice and tight; it also just wakes me up," Winslet added.
