Kate Middleton has been showing off her stunning grace and impeccable sense of style since her beautiful wedding with Prince William in 2011. While taking on her role as a senior member of the royal family, Kate has managed to still showcase her beautiful taste in clothing and her own personal sense of style. She has managed to mix modern trends with the classical elegance that the royal family encompasses while even starting some new trends in the process.

From her everyday looks to her most extravagant pieces at royal events, Kate has managed to look absolutely beautiful every single time she has been seen out and about. Whether it’s a simple skirt suit, a vibrantly loud hat, or her gorgeous wedding gown, the Duchess of Cambridge has inspired women all over the world to follow in her footsteps and follow a poised yet modern and elegant sense of fashion. Although Kate seems to have been gifted with her impeccable taste, she has also taken inspiration from others in her fashion endeavors.

Being in line to become a future queen may seem daunting, but having the help and support from family members can ease one’s nerves. Kate joined the royal family when she married William, and was even inspired by one of one of his family members. She has been seen as a British cultural and fashion icon ever since taking on her royal title. Kate’s stunning wedding dress was inspired in part by Prince Charles’ second wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and her daughter.

In a statement released by the palace in April 2011, more details about Kate’s choice of designer was revealed. The palace stated, “Miss Middleton chose British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing.” This designer was the best option for Kate to demonstrate her modern, yet tastefully traditional style, allowing Kate to look feminine and contemporary all at the same time. “The dress epitomises timeless British craftsmanship by drawing together talented and skilled workmanship from across the United Kingdom,” the statement said.

Kate’s wedding dress was designed by Sarah Burton, a creative director for the fashion house of Alexander McQueen. Burton has worked with the designer since 1997. According to the palace, the dress was made out of French Chantilly lace and English Cluny lace. The wedding gown also had elements of ivory and white satin gazar, with individual hand-cut flowers adorning the elegant piece. Some of the flowers showcased on the extravagant piece included rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock. Even Kate’s shoes were handcrafted by the McQueen team, containing elements of ivory satin with hand-embroidered lace.

The royal family welcomed Kate into the family by helping her with her beautiful wedding look. It was noted in a statement released by the palace that Queen Elizabeth II lent her Cartier tiara to the Duchess for the special day. Pippa Middleton, Kate’s sister, also had her dress designed by Burton. It also had ivory satin with plenty of intricate and beautiful detailing throughout the piece.

The Royal Inspiration

Much like Kate, Camilla has also been known for having a gracious sense of style. She has found her own aesthetic, enhancing her personal style with the help of some notable fashion designers. Camilla typically wears neutral colors with simple fits, adorned with gorgeous and bright jewelry. She was even listed as one of Britain’s best dressed people in 2018 by Tatler magazine. Although Camilla is known for having her own beautiful sense of style, it was her daughter who truly inspired Kate’s choice in a designer for her wedding.

Sara Parker Bowles, formerly known as Sara Buys, also asked McQueen to design her wedding dress for her marriage to British food writer and food critic Tom Parker Bowles in September 2005. He is also the son of the Duchess of Cornwall. Although the pair split in 2018, Sara’s beautiful wedding dress cannot be forgotten.

Her dress was simple, with both modern and classical touches to the already gorgeous gown. The form-fitting piece had a flair of ruffles at the bottom, accompanied by a long, detailed veil as an accessory. It was riddled with the famous McQueen flair and touches, as the fashion house is known for its extreme styles as well as chic ready-to-wear looks. It seemed to be calling out to Kate with such a similarity in taste.

It’s no surprise that Kate would pick such an acclaimed designer to create her fairytale dress. What’s even more touching is how she stayed true to the family by following in the footsteps of Sara.
