Although Duchess Kate Middleton has many interests she takes on, highlighting how big apart nature plays in children’s early development is something she feels passionately about.

The royal just attended a Back To Nature festival which celebrates communities coming together to help culminate garden projects and spending time outdoors. The duchess also revealed to attendees that her youngest son, Prince Louis loves smelling the flowers outside.

Kate attended the event where she opened a play garden at the RHS Wisley Gardens. Kensington Palace wrote on their Instagram, “The Back to Nature play garden was inspired by The Duchess’s designs and includes elements such as the hollow log from the #RHSChelsea Flower Show garden, and the wildflower meadow and rolling hill showcased at #RHSHampton.”

Kate said a few words at the event about how she believes spending quality time outside is very beneficial for young children.

“The experiences we gain during our earliest years influences who we become as people,” the Duchess began. “Whether it is planting, exploring, digging, creating or playing; quality time spent outside provides children with the perfect environment to form those positive relationships with the people in their lives and the world around them,” she continued.

One of the attendees at the event Sarah Griffiths said to People about the Duchess, “She was telling us how her son Louis loves smelling flowers. He enjoys being outside.” Kate also said at the event that she’s aware she may not be as heavily involved in gardening and the outdoors as some of the other attendees of the event but she still feels strongly about its purpose.

“I am not as green-fingered as many of you here, but I was passionate about creating a garden that inspired children and adults alike to get back to nature and reap the positive mental and physical health benefits that it can bring,” the Duchess said as cited by People
