Once in a while, it becomes clear that despite being bestowed with a royal title, members of the royal family are just like any of us. Even though they have different lives from regular people, they face the same challenges in their life as us, and this was clear when royal expert Katie Nicholl opened up to The Mirror about a conversation that Kate Middleton had with Queen Elizabeth II when she became a new mom after Prince George's birth.
One thing that makes Kate and Prince William one of the most popular royals of today is the fact that they want their kids to lead normal lives as far as possible. This also meant that they wanted to be regular parents as far as possible when they first had George. However, being a royal or not, parenting is hard on anyone and this became clear quite quickly when Kate attempted to balance her royal and motherly duties.
Kate reportedly opened up to Elizabeth about her troubles in a heart-to-heart conversation and felt quite supported, according to Nicholl. After all, the queen is someone who fully understands how complicated it can be to balance being a senior member of the royal family while also being a devoted mother.
Luckily for Kate, she has both her husband's side of the family as well as her own to lean on when things get difficult, and both sides have provided the support she has needed. Kate and William have made it clear to them that family is of utmost importance, and it is clear that they have learned this from their own families.
The Mirror reported that before George was born, both Kate and William wanted to be hands-on parents and opted to not have a nanny. Instead, the couple moved into Kate's parents' house, The Manor, where Kate's parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, helped out with the newborn. This most likely helped the new parents to adjust to their new roles as parents. When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge returned to their home, however, it became difficult to balance royal duties as well as parenting for both of them.
It was during the family's visit to Sandringham for Christmas that Kate opened up to Elizabeth about the new challenges. The two women had a heart-to-heart. Nicholl explained in True Royaly's "Kate Middleton: Heir We Go Again" documentary, "Kate was having a conversation with the queen in which she confided that she had found being with George on her own, and not having a full-time nanny or a maternity nurse, very hard," Nicholl said. "William and Kate wanted to be hands on parents, and they did it until September and then they recruited a nanny."
Their experience with George was a lesson for the couple, and they hired a maternity nurse as soon as Charlotte was born. About this decision, parenting writer Kelly Rose Bradford said, "I think despite their good intentions first time around, Kate and William did soon realize they couldn't hold down their jobs and also care full time for their child." Many parents also go through the same thing when they try to balance their careers with parenting.

An important distinction is that Kate could turn to her parents and siblings during the first few months of being a parent, and this help is extended to Kate even today. Nicholl continued in the documentary, "One of the things that allows William and Kate to be so ordinary is the presence of the Middletons in their lives. Carol is a regular through those golden gates at Kensington Palace, she whizzes through in her Land Rover. There is no security because everybody knows her."
She goes on to say, "She turns up to help with bedtime and bathtime. She is absolutely indispensable. She was from the very start when William and Kate moved into the Middleton's house, The Manor, for the early weeks of George's life."
"It was to Carole that Kate went when she was so poorly, she didn't want to face the world, she didn't want to be in a palace on her own while William studied for his new job, she wanted to be with mum," Nicholl added. "I think that's very special. I think it's wonderful that she's been allowed to do it, that the courtiers haven't stood in her way. She can go home, not be photographed and actually just be Kate. Being looked after by mum."
As is the case for most people, having your own mother around makes all the difference in the world.
Kate's parents have been an important part of William's life as well through the years. Speaking to their relationship, royal reporter Simon Vigar said, "Carole is very involved in the upbringing of George and looking after her eldest daughter Kate when she was ill with this extreme morning sickness. For many weeks, Kate was at home in Berkshire with mum and dad and grandma Middleton was taking up the strain."
