The glamorous looks of the royal family's women are not only inspired by their own personal style but are also influenced by the fashion that came before them. Princess Diana led the way in the modern-day for one-of-a-kind outfits that generations of royal women lovingly mimicked, including the ever-beautiful Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle. Here are some of our favorites.

Every time a royal mother debuts their baby outside of the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital in London, it is an iconic photo opportunity. In a playful nod to the moment when Princess Diana emerged from the wing with her baby Prince Harry in 1984, Kate also wore a red long-sleeved outfit when she emerged with her third child, Prince Louis in 2018.

Meghan Markle channeled her late mother-in-law when she was an audience member of Cirque Du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall when she was pregnant with Archie in 2019. The dark-colored sparkled dress was reminiscent of the one Princess Diana wore to the Diamond Ball in 1990.

Kate Middleton once again looked to Princess Diana when she had her first solo trip abroad to the Netherlands in 2016. The periwinkle number looked very similar to her V-E Day celebrations skirt suit she wore in 1995.

Meghan and Diana are both known to take fashion risks so it's no wonder they both liked a bold military-inspired motif: Diana when she visited Sandhurst Military Academy in 1987 and the Duchess in a 2019 Commonwealth Service.

Elegance comes in spades with the royal women, and two red carpet moments were no exception. Kate and Meghan are both patrons of the arts and are known to show up at movie events once in a while. The incredible off-the-shoulder white gown that Kate Middleton wore to the 2019 BAFTAs was a perfect picture of the 1983 James Bond premiere outfit that Princess Diana sported.

Green dreams: 1982 vs. 2020

In a remarkable last hurrah, Meghan Markle chose an emerald green ensemble complete with a pillbox hat and delicate netting for her final official royal engagement at a 2020 Commonwealth Service. The entire outfit had royal watchers compare it to Princess Diana's 1982 Trooping the Colour outfit when she was pregnant with Prince William.

Have a look at the similarities and differences between the three women on their wedding days, perhaps one of their most important style moments:
