Kate Middleton And Her Son Were Seen Biking In Hyde Park, Stunning An Onlooker

Given the royal family’s high-profile and international celebrity, it’s sometimes difficult to remember that members of the storied family are real people with real lives. For most of us, especially for those who don’t live in England, we see Prince William and Kate Middleton’s faces plastered on the covers of countless magazines and on TV, and yet we never encounter them as living, breathing individuals. But for Londoners, spotting members of the royal family is certainly within the realm of possibility — and Mayleen Ramey’s viral story is proof of that.

On June 30, Ramey took to Twitter to excitedly tell her followers that she had “a literal run-in” with two members of the royal family while she was on her way to a dance class in Hyde Park.

Ramey, who lives in London, was approaching the Queen’s Gate entrance to Hyde Park when she saw a young boy fly by on his bicycle with his mom in tow. As a lover of children, Ramey was quick to say a friendly hello to the boy, only to realize that she recognized the cyclist and his mother. It was, according to Ramey’s account, 7-year-old Prince George and Kate Middleton.

Ramey admits that she walked away from the encounter both “elated,” for having met members of the royal family, and “embarrassed” for having greeted literal royalty with a casual “hi.”

Since Ramey tweeted about her surprise run-in on June 30, prominent media outlets have picked up her story and the original tweet has received more than 500 likes.

“Had the most random & epic “celeb spotting” this morning in London. It was a literal run-in as we almost collided,” Ramey tweeted.

“It started as a grumpy day. I was stressed and sleep-deprived, grumbling to myself as a dragged my sleepy bum to dance class in Hyde Park,” she continues.

“As I was approaching the Queen’s Gate entrance, I see a young boy on a bike racing towards me on the sidewalk, while gleefully saying ‘I can’t go slower!’ as his Mom chases inches behind.

“As I do when I see all kids, I break into a grin and say a big ‘hiiii!’ as he zooms by.”

In the original tweet, Ramey contends that the “young boy on a bike” is Prince George. However, other Twitter users — along with media outlets like Hello! Magazine — have pointed out that the young cyclist was probably 3-year-old Louis since George would have been in school at that time.

In response to the correction, Ramey wrote, “Ah! Didn’t realize that, it all happened so quickly 🙂  was hoping someone else who had seen them would tweet about it and confirm. I’d love to know! 😁”

“He is known to go to Nursery through the park followed by his mum on the bike, where as George and Charlottes school is much further away and are taken by car,” the user who corrected Ramey’s post added. “Louis is so like his brother and tall so would be easy to mistake him.”

Ahead of his third birthday in April, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge posted a photo of Louis with a red bicycle — perhaps the same one that Ramey saw this June.

In April 2021, Louis started his first day at preschool at London's Willcocks Nursery School, which is just over a 10-minute walk from Kensington Palace, where the duke and duchess live. The preschool also has a well-earned reputation.

The government Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills — simply known as Ofsted in the U.K. — gave the nursery school “outstanding” marks in all categories in a 2020 inspection of the facility. 

“Staff provide an exceptionally nurturing and vibrant environment, where children play together in harmony. Staff greet parents and their children warmly when they arrive at the nursery. Children self-register, develop a very strong sense of belonging and community, and display high levels of curiosity,” the report reads.

According to the preschool’s website, parents have to register their children at birth to get a shot at securing a spot at the elite school. After the £125 ($170) registration fee, parents will have to wait and see whether they receive an offer from the school. If you’re one of the lucky few who get a place, sending your child to Willcocks will cost you. There are three terms during the academic year, which range in cost from £2,250 ($3,118) for morning care to £3400 ($4,712) for afternoon care.

Meanwhile, George and Charlotte attend Thomas Battersea, located in south London. However, the private school only educates children up until the age of 13, and so George is nearing the age when he will have to find a different school. According to the Evening Standard, George is likely to attend Eton College in Windsor, England. The boarding school for boys is known for educating the elite, with alumni such as Prince William, Prince Harry and Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester.
