If you’re an “America’s Got Talent” fan you have seen a lot of ups and downs over the 14 seasons that it’s been on the air. However, this crucial moment is probably something you’ve never seen before—because that was certainly true for even some of the judges.

When Kodi Lee stepped on stage with his mother Tina, the two of them had quite a story for the audience. Kodi has autism and is also blind, and came on stage with his cane, having to be assisted in finding the piano and sitting down.

His mom told the judges that Kodi was a music aficionado from a very early age, “He listened and his eyes just went huge and he started singing and I was just in tears. That’s when I realized oh my gosh, he’s an entertainer.”

Now at 22 years old, he is fulfilling his wish to perform in front of thousands of people. The moment that the first notes from the piano rang out, it was clear that Kodi is incredibly comfortable with a piano. But Kodi took it all to the next level the second that his voice rang out through the theater singing “A Song For You” by Donny Hathaway.

The cameras caught judges Simon Cowell’s jaw drop to the floor while Julianne Hough was completely stunned with tears in her eyes. Howie Mandel covered his mouth in shock but it was the newest judge Gabrielle Union who was the most visibly bowled over. After the rousing performance, the audience was on their feet amazed by Kodi’s astonishing voice.

Gabrielle was still emotional when she decided to use her golden buzzer. This is a buzzer that each judge only gets once in the whole entire season that brings the contestant all the way to the live shows, skipping a lot of rounds before that. It is a seal of approval for real talent that shines through the rest.

It’s not easy to win over judge Simon Cowell but he was clearly impressed. “What just happened there was extraordinary,” he said. “I’m going to remember this moment for the rest of my life.” It was apparent that for Kodi, music is such an authentic expression and his mom Tina explained,

“Through music and performing he was able to withstand living in this world because when you’re autistic it’s really hard to do what everybody else does,” she said, “It actually has saved his life playing music.”
