Judge Judith Sheindlin is set to receive one of the biggest honors in the entertainment industry later this year according to a report in Variety. Judge Sheindlin will be honored at the 46th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on May 5 with the Lifetime Achievement Award. A former family court judge, Sheindlin has been doing Judge Judy since 1996. The news marks the first time an individual associated with a courtroom or legal program has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The show itself has won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program three times in 2013, 2016, and 2017. Both the highest rated court program and the highest rated first-run syndication program, Judge Judy averages about 10 million viewers per episode.

Adam Sharp, who heads the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which distributes Emmy Awards, lauded Judge Sheindlin’s commitment to the show, proclaiming it as the epitome of excellence and diversity. David Michaels, another senior official with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, also applauded Judge Judy’s contributions to daytime television, saying that the show reinvigorated the courtroom genre.
