Josh Hartnett Stepped Away From Hollywood After Finding The Pressures Of Fame ‘Overwhelming’

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Josh Hartnett was on a career trajectory that many people would have envied. He found his first round of fame and recognition in 1997 with his role as Michael Fitzgerald in the TV crime drama series “Cracker.” The following year, he made his film debut in the 1998 slasher film “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later.” For the next decade, he continued making waves in the industry.

Hartnett was born on July 21, 1978, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. While he is now known as an actor and producer, this reality was once just a big dream for the would-be star. Hartnett hasn’t shared much about his early childhood aside from being raised by his father and stepmother.

In 1996, he moved to New York to attend the Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film at SUNY Purchase, but nothing really came of it. However, he moved to Los Angeles the following year and luckily landed a breakthrough role on “Cracker.” Although the series was short-lived, Hartnett had already started establishing himself in the industry, and many people were excited that he could become the next big thing.

At this time, Hartnett shifted his focus to film. Over the next several years, Hartnett picked up roles playing the bad boy or villain in many of the films he appeared in. While it may have seemed like he was living a pretty glamorous lifestyle, the actor had some troubles behind the scenes and eventually stepped away from the forefront of Hollywood. Since then, many fans have wondered what caused Hartnett to make this decision and what he’s up to today.

In the late 1990s, Hartnett stepped onto the scene and quickly began making a name for himself. He appeared as Michael Fitzgerald on the TV series “Cracker,” but the show was canceled almost as soon as it started. Fortunately, Hartnett switched to films following this, and went on to appear in “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later and “The Virgin Suicides.”

Moving forward, Hartnett found himself starring in very impressive films including the war films “Pearl Harbor” and “Black Hawk Down,” both in 2001. He made a name for himself as a Hollywood bad boy – at least in films – and went on to appear in “The Black Dahlia” in 2006 and “30 Days of Night” in 2007. From 2014 to 2016, he appeared on the TV show “Penny Dreadful.”

In his personal life, Hartnett has been in a long-term relationship since 2012. He began dating actress Tamsin Egerton during this time, and the two tied the knot in Nov. 2021. They currently have three children together.

However, Hartnett hadn’t appeared in big box office films in the later 2010s and into the 2020s. Many fans began to wonder what had happened to the star as he wasn’t as big as many people had imagined he would be. According to The Guardian, “Pearl Harbor” director Michael Bay believed that Hartnett would be “huge.” However, Hartnett said, “Huge was never something I aspired to.”

Surprisingly, Hartnett initially didn’t want to do “Pearl Harbor.” He explained:

“I didn’t necessarily want things to change that much. I was happy with the amount of fame I had and the types of roles I was getting.”

The actor revealed that he had been afraid of entering a new film genre and didn’t know if he was ready for it, but ultimately decided to do it. “Then it defined me, which means I was right to fear it,” Hartnett added in his 2020 interview with The Guardian. The actor felt he was held at a higher caliber following this, including his time filming “Black Hawk Down.” He explained:

“People got a chip on their shoulder about me after that. They genuinely thought I’d been thrust on them. It was a very weird time.”

In the same interview, Hartnett reflected on the more prominent years of his career.

“It’s a little heartbreaking to see all that time has passed,” he said. “I was a child. I was 19. ‘The Virgin Suicides’ felt like a group of friends all pulling together. I think I’m still looking for that experience whenever I make a film.”

In Dec. 2021, Hartnett opened up more about what really led him to take a bit of a backseat when it came to Hollywood. Rather than being a Hollywood frontman working with major name studios, he found more enjoyment with lesser known films and production companies. In an interview with The Project, he said:

“The biggest thing for me was I really enjoyed making films, but the industry itself was overwhelming for a 21-year-old kid. The press was a little different back then. There were paparazzi around every corner.”

Nowadays, Hartnett is 43 years old and still acting. He starred in the TV series “The Fear Index” in 2022, and his IMDb reports that he is set to appear in a few films in the upcoming future.
