On Feb. 9, 2025, Grammy Award-winning artist Jon Batiste delivered a moving tribute to the United States at Super Bowl LIX. Born Jonathan Batiste on Nov. 11, 1986, in New Orleans, Louisiana, a city rich in musical heritage, he has gained widespread recognition for his work in jazz, pop, and television, particularly as the bandleader on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Known for his powerful performances and deep musical connection, Batiste captivated the audience with a soulful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the highly anticipated Super Bowl matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs at the Caesars Superdome.

Other pregame performers at Super Bowl LIX included Trombone Shorty and Lauren Daigle, who delivered a stunning rendition of “America the Beautiful,” and Ledisi, who performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Moreover, Kendrick Lamar headlined the highly anticipated Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, joined by special guest SZA.

In the lead-up to game day, Batiste shared details about his performance in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. The artist expressed his enthusiasm for creating a timeless rendition of the American national anthem: “I’m excited to figure out an arrangement that lasts the test of time, and I look forward to sharing it.”

Batiste also revealed that he planned to finalize his arrangement “the week before” the actual Super Bowl, adding a touch of suspense to the process.

“And then it’s going to fly,” he said, hinting at the emotional power that would come through in his performance.

The anticipation surrounding his performance grew as fans eagerly awaited how he would bring his unique style to the iconic anthem.

For his performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Batiste dressed in an all-black suit with gold and silver accessories. The artist sat at a piano decorated with vibrant multi-colored motifs as his powerful voice echoed through the stadium, honoring the nation’s anthem with profound emotion.

The moment was even more heartfelt as players, coaches, and prominent figures in the audience stood in respect. Chiefs coach Andy Reid was seen holding his hat over his chest while the Eagles’ quarterback, Jalen Hurts, closed his eyes, reflecting deeply on the moment. Among the onlookers in the crowd was President Donald Trump, who was captured saluting from his box mid-performance.

As Batiste reached the song’s powerful high note, the U.S. Marine Corps completed a flyover, adding to the patriotic atmosphere. The broadcast also honored the U.S. First Regiment Corps of Cadets, briefly showing them in salute. This stirring performance exemplified the pride and unity of the nation, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed it.

Batiste’s national anthem performance at Super Bowl LIX was made even more special with an American Sign Language interpretation by Stephanie Nogueras. The NFL revealed the lineup of pregame entertainers in November 2024, with Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the organization, expressing his excitement:

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state.”

He further added:

“The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kick off Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

The diverse group of artists truly brought the spirit of New Orleans to life on the global stage, making the event even more memorable for fans worldwide.

The Superbowl 2025 concluded with the Philadelphia Eagles securing a dominant 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, ending the Chiefs’ bid for a historic three-peat.
