Johnny Depp Is Raking In Millions With His Artistic Portraits Of Celebrities

One of Hollywood’s most iconic actors is “Pirates of the Caribbean” star Johnny Depp. He has appeared in several of director Tim Burton’s films throughout his illustrious career, including “Edward Scissorhands,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Alice in Wonderland.” Depp is widely regarded as one of the world’s most famous movie stars and was listed as the highest-paid actor by Guinness World Records in 2012.

Depp dropped out of high school and began his career as a musician before moving into acting. He made his movie debut in 1984 with the horror film “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” The actor then went on to become a household name with his success on the television series “21 Jump Street.” Some of the star’s other notable films include “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” “Benny and Joon” and “Chocolat.”

In his personal life, Depp has been married and divorced twice. He has also had long-term relationships with other women, including Winona Ryder, Kate Moss and Vanessa Paradis, who is the mother of his two children. Paradis and Depp were together from 1998 to 2012.

Depp has been on the receiving end of negative publicity, especially after his private life started unfolding in public. In 2015, he married Amber Heard, but she filed for a divorce in 2016, and multiple lawsuits involving the pair have since gained immense media attention.

While Depp’s film career has had highs and lows, the talented actor isn’t confining himself to one creative path. He has dabbled in music, releasing albums and touring with musician Jeff Beck in 2022. Now, the star is trying his hand with fine arts, and it appears painting is turning out to be just as lucrative a field for the star as any.

In July 2022, Depp made his first venture into the contemporary art scene by releasing a collection of four prints in partnership with Castle Fine Art gallery in London’s Covent Garden. The prints comprised four portraits of Elizabeth Taylor, Al Pacino, Keith Richards and Bob Dylan and were entitled the “Friends & Heroes” collection. Within mere hours of releasing the 780 prints for purchase, they were sold out and Depp is believed to have netted upwards of $4 million from their sale. According to Castle Fine Art, the “world-first release proved to be our fastest-selling collection to date, selling out in just hours.”

The gallery added the collection “saw (Depp) focus on people he has known well, and who have inspired him as a person” and that “each image is an intimate reflection of their character in Johnny’s eyes; a portrayal of how they have revealed themselves to him.”

The gallery added Depp’s “art exists at the intersection of ‘Pop Art’ and ‘Street Art’” and “working from photographic references, each image has been stripped back to a simpler and iconic portrayal of the subject, which Johnny has then developed and energized with his characteristic freehand flourishes.”

Before the collection’s release, Depp described his endeavor as such:

“I’ve always used art to express my feelings and to reflect on those who matter most to me, like my family, friends and people I admire. My paintings surround my life, but I kept them to myself and limited myself. No one should ever limit themselves.”

Although all the prints from the collection are listed as “Out of Stock” on the gallery’s website, the prices showed each individual print going for £3,291.67 (about $3,890) and £12,458.33 (about $14,725) for a set of four before tax.

In 2023, Depp released the second series of his “Friends and Heroes” collection with similarly lucrative results. It again comprised four portraits, this time of Bob Marley, Hunter S. Thompson, River Phoenix and Heath Ledger. Each framed and ready-to-hang portrait was priced at £3,750 (about $4,435) each, while the set of four could be purchased for £14,583.33 (about $17,250) before tax. In just days after going up for sale on Feb. 27, the individual portraits have sold out once more, netting the actor an estimated whopping £4.5 million (about $5.3 million).

A spokesperson told Daily Mail within five days, “they had virtually all gone, there were just a handful of the River Phoenix prints left. I expect they will have sold out as well by now.” As surmised, they were.

The positive response to his artwork surprised even the “Donnie Brasco” star himself, who said he was buzzed the public was interested in his projects “outside of his day job.” He added:

“For many years, I really held myself strictly to just the day job of the film business, even though I’ve always needed to escape into a blank piece of paper, whether it be writing, drawing or painting a blank canvas. Tackling something for the first time with no idea of what’s about to commence and what it will come out to be is deeply fulfilling.”

He said the feedback he has received for his handiwork has been nothing short of inspiring. “For people to actually see this stuff now for the first time, to react the way that they have, so positively, to whatever I have made is very moving,” he remarked.
