Johnny Cash’s Grandson Sounds Just Like The Icon Himself—Here's Proof

The deep, resonating vocals of Johnny Cash still echo through country music history. He is an iconoclast of stage presence and ingenuity, but it is that unique and echoing voice that still makes him a favorite today.

Johnny had a very rock-n-roll lifestyle but still made plenty of time to spend with his children. He had four daughters with his first wife Vivian Liberto—Rosanne, Kathy, Cindy, and Tara—and one son with his second wife June Carter—John Carter Cash. Rosanne spoke with Country Living about the family. They expanded through the generations and his daughter Kathy had a little boy, Thomas Gabriel.

As the oldest Cash grandchild, Johnny had a special place in his heart for Thomas. He wanted his musical ability to be passed down and the two of them would do duets on stage. Thomas’ bio says the two would sing “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

His bio also credits his grandfather for a life-changing moment: Johnny encouraged him one day when they were in the studio together when Thomas was 21.

He told him, “Son, you sound a lot like I did when I was younger; work on those vocals.”

Thomas took that advice and he ran with it. He worked on those vocals and his music but life got in the way and he didn’t pursue a full-time music career, until recently. Now Thomas has a band and is on tour singing original music and that of his grandfather’s.

He recently did a cover of the Man in Black’s song “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.” After the musical introduction and when Thomas’ voice comes in, your ears will perk up. The deep baritone sounds so clear, strong, and most of all, familiar. There can only be one Johnny Cash but listening to his grandchild is a close second.
