John Stamos Just Shared the Most Unexpected Way Bob Saget Is Still Making Him Laugh Four Years Later

John Stamos received the Bob Saget Legacy Award on October 13, 2026, at the Scleroderma Research Foundation’s Cool Comedy Hot Cuisine fundraiser in Los Angeles. Saget had been a longtime ambassador for the foundation — which funds research into the autoimmune disease that killed his sister Gay in 1994. His name is now on the award.
“Well, it makes me sad that he’s not here giving it to me,” Stamos told PEOPLE at the event. “But it’s, you know, it’s an honor.”
He then said something that shifted the mood entirely.
“I’ll tell you, he is really living through my son,” Stamos said of his 8-year-old son Billy, whom he shares with his wife Caitlin McHugh. “I’m always looking for signs. I swear to God, I see Bob and my son now all the time.”
What specifically made him say that? His son has what Stamos called “toilet Tourette’s.” Billy came home that very day and said: “Mom, Dad, poop. That’s Bob.”
“So Bob is making me laugh through my son, which is really special,” Stamos said.
Saget died on January 9, 2022, at the age of 65. Stamos, who played Jesse Katsopolis alongside Saget’s Danny Tanner on “Full House” for eight seasons, has spoken about the loss with consistent openness in the four years since. On the fourth anniversary of Saget’s death, Stamos posted private photographs and wrote: “Missing Bob feels like standing in a quiet room after the laughter stops. 4 f---ing years.”
The award bearing Saget’s name was not given to just anyone. It was given to John Stamos, who described receiving it as bittersweet — and then immediately told a toilet joke.
Saget would have approved.

Stamos and Saget’s friendship went far deeper than their shared television set. Saget was present for some of the hardest moments of Stamos’s life — supporting him through the deaths of his parents, and through his 2015 DUI arrest and hospitalization. “No judgment, no lecture,” was how Stamos described Saget’s response. He simply showed up. He simply stayed.
Stamos has also written a children’s book with Billy — about hummingbirds, and about the idea that spirits from the past return in small and unexpected ways. “Billy, my son, and I wrote a children’s book that’s coming out about hummingbirds,” he told PEOPLE. The theme, as anyone who has followed Stamos’s public processing of Saget’s death would recognize, is not accidental.
Dave Coulier — who played Joey Gladstone on “Full House” and was among Saget’s closest friends — was also onstage at the Cool Comedy Hot Cuisine event. He and Stamos have appeared together multiple times in the years since Saget’s death to honor his memory. Coulier reflected on what it means to carry the legacy of someone who made people laugh for a living.
Stamos has described missing Saget as “love with nowhere to go.” The children’s book is one place he is putting it. The award is another. And then there is his 8-year-old son, who comes home from school and says things that make his father think of his best friend.
Saget died in January 2022. Stamos received an award in his name in October 2026. The toilet jokes, apparently, are eternal.
Four years. The laughter has not stopped.
