On July 13, 2025, legendary actor John Goodman made a striking appearance on the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of the “Smurfs,” turning heads with his continued 200-pound weight loss transformation. The 74-year-old star was all smiles at the Paramount Theater, confidently showing off his slimmed-down figure in a tailored navy blue suit, a patterned tie, and polished brown shoes.

Goodman voices the beloved character Papa Smurf in the animated reboot, released in theaters on July 18, 2025. Beyond his current voice role, Goodman has had a storied and celebrated career spanning over four decades. The film also features an all-star cast including Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, and Daniel Levy. Fans of the franchise were eager to see Goodman bring warmth, humor, and gravitas to the wise and fatherly leader of the Smurfs.

Goodman rose to national fame in the late 1980s as Dan Conner on the iconic 1988 sitcom “Roseanne,” a role that earned him a Golden Globe award and multiple Emmy nominations. Goodman has also become a frequent collaborator with the Coen Brothers, appearing in acclaimed films such as “The Big Lebowski,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” and “Barton Fink.”

His distinctive voice and commanding screen presence have made him a beloved figure in both film and television. Not to mention that his health transformation has only added to his enduring legacy, demonstrating not only his commitment to his craft but also to his personal well-being. It’s no wonder, then, that fans have continued to cheer on his inspiring journey.

Goodman has been maintaining his remarkable weight loss since beginning his fitness journey back in 2007, a transformation that has been both inspiring and deeply personal. Over the years, the beloved actor has been candid about his challenges and triumphs, shedding light on the physical and emotional commitment required to make lasting lifestyle changes.

He joked to AARP back in 2023:

“I don’t want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on – when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner’s sugar.”

Known for his signature sense of humor, Goodman has never shied away from poking fun at his past habits while also highlighting the seriousness of his transformation. The actor credited his weight loss to portion control, admitting that in the past, he “was just shoving everything into my mouth.”

Standing at 6’2”, Goodman once revealed to David Letterman that he was “pushing 400” pounds at his heaviest in 2011. The decision to change, he explained, came from a desire “to live life better.” In a candid interview with PEOPLE, Goodman reflected on how his lifestyle had taken a toll on him.

“I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste,” he said, adding, “It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next.”

“I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous,” he continued.

In addition to portion control, Goodman said he quit drinking, hired a health coach, and incorporated regular workouts into his routine.
