Phoenix told Indie Wire he was hesitant at taking the role in "Joker." He contends that although he was unsure of the script he couldn't come up with any reasons why he shouldn't take the role. “That’s what made me feel I had to do it. I felt overwhelmed and terrified by it, Phoenix said.

"Usually when I’m scared of something, it makes me feel like I have to go towards it. I had so many mixed feelings about the character. And I like that. I don’t think we have enough of that in movies, particularly in a superhero genre movie. I hate the idea of labeling something, just mostly because I don’t really know what the genres are.”

Phoenix joins a prestigious list of actors who have been awarded Golden Globes in the Best Actor catergory including Leonardo DiCaprio for this performance in "The Revenant." Rami Malek took home a Golden Globe after he starred in the biopic on Freddie Mercury, "Bohemian Rhapsody.”
