Joaquin Phoenix Thanks His Mother For Not Giving Up On Him During Critics' Choice Awards Acceptance Speech

Joaquin Phoenix, star of last year's blockbuster hit "The Joker," took home the 2020 Critics' Choice Award for best actor. In his acceptance speech he lovingly thanked his mother for supporting him and not giving up on him. 

Phoenix said in his speech “I need to thank my mom," as he turned towards Arlyn Phoenix. "Mom, you’ve always been my greatest inspiration. Even when self-pity led me astray, you didn’t give up on me… I appreciate your support.”

 Phoenix also took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama. He gave a long speech where he acknowledged his other fellow nominators, lovingly looked out at his fiancee actress Rooney Mara, and brought up climate change and how Hollywood needs to change.

In Phoenix's Critic's Choice Awards speech he opened by thanking the ceremony for choosing to serve a plant-based menu to the audience. "I’d like to thank the awards for going plant-based and trying to offset our carbon footprint,” he said. “I do appreciate that.” He also finished off his speech by telling Hollywood that they need to take responsibility for themselves and make sacrifices in their own lives. 

Phoenix told Indie Wire he was hesitant at taking the role in "Joker." He contends that although he was unsure of the script he couldn't come up with any reasons why he shouldn't take the role. “That’s what made me feel I had to do it. I felt overwhelmed and terrified by it, Phoenix said.

"Usually when I’m scared of something, it makes me feel like I have to go towards it. I had so many mixed feelings about the character. And I like that. I don’t think we have enough of that in movies, particularly in a superhero genre movie. I hate the idea of labeling something, just mostly because I don’t really know what the genres are.”
