When compared to other U.S. presidents and first ladies, Carter and his wife are leading a modest lifestyle. Carter and Rosalynn, according to the Washington Post, live in a farmhouse that is located in Plains, Georgia and is valued at $167,000. The publication says the estate is “less than the value of the armored Secret Service vehicles parked outside.”

Now, 75 years later, the couple lives a simple life back in the small town where they both were born. The pair told People that their long marriage has lasted because of their shared passion for the service of others. They have built houses in Nepal and fought river blindness alongside one another with their charitable organization, The Carter Center.

Carter credits his long life to Rosalynn and Jesus telling the tabloid, "I think the best explanation for that is to marry the best spouse: someone who will take care of you and engage and do things to challenge you and keep you alive and interested in life. One of the things Jesus taught was: If you have any talents, try to utilize them for the benefit of others."
