Jim Carrey Details What He Did After Learning He Had 10 Minutes To Live

Jim Carrey has been bringing laughter to the world since the 1980s and has established himself as one of Hollywood's best when it comes to physical and observational comedies. But in 2018, his world almost ended after he thought he had 10 minutes to live, and he detailed his reaction to the whole strange incident.

Carrey, who grew up in Canada, started doing stand-up comedies as a teenager in 1977 to help his parents with money after his father lost his job as an accountant. Forced to drop out of school, the "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" star worked as a janitor as well, but they were still unable to afford the rent.

For some months, his whole family lived in a van since they became homeless. Somehow, things got better after Carrey's comedic talents were recognized, and he was hired to open for big comedy acts. He got his foot at the door of international fame when he started booking gigs in Las Vegas, and then he moved to Hollywood in 1983 for his regular stint at The Comedy Store.

A few months later, Carrey debuted on television as a stand-up comedian featured on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," and then he eventually landed a sitcom. "The Duck Factory," however, was short-lived, so Carrey returned to the stage and did more tours with Rodney Dangerfield.

Because of his performance in these tours, The Samuel Goldwyn Company wanted him to play the lead in "Once Bitten," his first Hollywood movie, which paved the way for more acting projects. Carrey also tried to audition for "Saturday Night Live," but he was rejected more than once.

Carrey's biggest break came when he became part of the ensemble of "In Living Color" from 1990 to 1994 until he landed the career-defining role as the pet detective, "Ace Ventura." This film was followed by more box office hits like "The Mask," "Dumb and Dumber" and "Liar Liar."

But after his commercial success, Carrey decided to slowly shift to doing movies and roles with critical acclaim, such as "The Truman Show" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," where he received Best Actor nominations. His shift to more serious roles was largely well-received by the critics and the public.

Carrey was planning a comeback to his roots as a slapstick comedian in Hawaii when he received word that there was a missile alert on the island in January 2018. Apparently, the alert came through the cellphone, which informed the residents that it was not a drill and they must seek shelter in 10 minutes.

Speaking with Jimmy Fallon on his show, the actor said that his first instinct was to fly out of Hawaii to get to his daughter, but it was not possible. With such a short time left, Carrey decided to spend what he thought was his last minutes on earth by gazing at the ocean overlooking his lanai. He then went through a list of things to be grateful for.

"I just could not stop thinking of wonderful things that have happened to me and blessings that I've had. It was lovely," he said.

With only two minutes left, the comedian then found out that the missile alert was a false alarm. Officials later confirmed that it was a human error, and Carrey joked that heads rolled when he got mad.
