Jewish Cousins Reunite After They Fled Romania 75 Years Ago Believing Each Other Dead

This last week of September saw a reunion that was like no other. The two of them left Romania more than 75 years ago, and they haven't seen each other since. Each one thought that the other died at the hands of the Nazis during the Holocaust.

Simon Mairowitz and Morris Sana grew up in Romania, and they were extremely close. In 1940, the family had to run for their lives because the Romanian government officials became allies of Nazi Germany after a fascist group brought the two together.

The boys and their families were Jewish, and they knew that their lives were in danger if they remained in Romania. Each family left Romania, and the boys believed that the other died in a concentration camp. Then, Mr. Sana's daughter started to research her family and their whereabouts.

Mr. Sana's daughter discovered that several of her family members were on Facebook, so she began to communicate with them. That's how she learned that Simon Mairowitz is still among the living!

Someone told Mr. Mairowitz that Mr. Sana was also alive, and he didn't waste any time booking a flight from Great Britain to Israel where he would see Mr. Sana again after all these years! Leetal Ofer, Mr. Sana's granddaughter, made good use of her video camera and recorded the meeting for all to see on Facebook.

The Reunion

Mr. Mairowitz waited patiently in a hotel room, and Mr. Sana came in. The second Mr. Mairowitz saw his cousin come forward, he immediately burst into tears. Mr. Sana was all smiles as he held out his arms to his cousin for a hug.

You can feel the love as the two of them speak to each other for the first time in 75 years!

Mr. Mairowitz and Mr. Sana gaze at each other in amazement, and Mr. Sana reminds Mr. Mairowitz that he is two years younger but can only think of Mr. Mairowitz as a young boy. Everyone in the room is crying, and they watch as the two men get to know each other again after so many years apart.

Mr. Sana's granddaughter captioned her video by saying, "My grandfather looked for his cousin after the Holocaust was over, but he couldn't find him. We got the cousins together again after 75 years. The war tore so many of us apart for years, but now, we are reunited in Israel."
