Jessica Simpson Endured Painful Heartbreaks Before Finding 'Sublime' Love With Husband Eric Johnson

Jessica Simpson is an American singer, fashion designer and actress. She was signed to Columbia Records in 1997 at the age of 17 after performing for years in her church choir. Her debut album was released in 1999 and was called “Sweet Kisses.” The album sold two million copies in the United States. For her second album, Simpson began to mature and the title track “Irresistible” entered the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Outside of her success as a singer, Simpson is known for the time she was married to fellow popstar, Nick Lachey. The couple was married in 2002 and they became the subject of a new reality series called “Newlyweds” which chronicled their lives as they figured out what it was like to be married. They stayed together for 4 years until they separated in late 2005. Their divorce was finalized in 2006.

Simpson has been very candid about her relationship with Lachey and the fact that she was only 18 when they met. The star feels she was too young to be married and it complicated what was an already difficult relationship with Lachey. Being on a reality show while having difficulties in a relationship took a toll on both of the stars and the series ended after they parted ways.

Another famous relationship that Simpson was a part of was when she dated musician John Mayer. Their relationship was also tumultuous, and Simspon says that Mayer was not just in love but also obsessed with her. Keep reading to learn more about their relationship and how Simpson found everlasting love with Eric Johnson in 2010.

Part of why Simspon stayed with Mayer in spite of their issues was because he was so different from Lachey. "I would get up to go to the bathroom, and John would ask, 'Where are you going?' While I was married, my ex-husband couldn't be bothered to figure out what city I was in. It felt safe to be desired. I know John would never cheat on me, and that confidence was a new feeling for me," Simpson said.

Mayer viewed Simpson as his muse, but there were times when that favor would run out. Simpson explained, "Sometimes it was out of the blue, other times I knew it was coming because my light would start to go dim. John loved me when I was shining, and he'd draw strength and inspiration to write from that light.”

Their relationship was full of ups and downs, and they broke up more than once. Simpson shared, "He'd dump me, then come back saying he had discovered he loved me after all. I always saw it as him mercifully taking me in from the cold. Every time John returned, I thought it was a continuation of a love story, while my friends saw a guy coming back for sex with some foolish girl."

With some help, Simpson finally came to terms with the fact that their relationship was not healthy. "I told my therapist this story a few months back, about John breaking up with me right before I went onstage,” she said, adding that her therapist told her, “‘That's not love, you know that, right? I mean, he never loved you...He was obsessed with you. Love and obsession are so different. One is healthy, one is not.'"

Simpson healed from her previous relationships and when she least expected it, Eric Johnson came into her life in 2010. The couple could not be happier more than 11 years down the road. “In terms of my marriage to Eric, I have never felt more myself or more free,” Simpson told Us Weekly in 2020. “Eric and I have a true mind, body and soul connection.

In May 2021, the couple celebrated their 11 year anniversary of meeting. On her Instagram, Simpson shared a photo of them together and wrote: “11 years STRONG... 11 hearts filled in every passing year with unconditional, passionate, inspired, fascinating, supportive, beautiful, tempting, ravishing, exquisite, sublime, marvelous, honest, happy, adored, ideal, incomparable, powerful, mesmERIC, LOVE.”

The pair were married in 2014, after having two children together. Their third child was born in 2019. Now, the happy pair celebrates every chance they get. “Our connected hearts are praised and celebrated on this serendipitous day. I knew the night we met, the fate of you locked the key to my searching heart and simply held my soul with love and honor. Then, now and for the rest of my life, I am fully and always yours and you mine,” Simpson wrote.

The post continued: “Gaining access to your heart to dwell and reside in, is the greatest gift I will ever rest within until the end of time. Time goes by, the perfect children you gave me are growing older, but with you and me time does not exist for it only allows space to broaden...expanding beyond horizons just to love and be loved. Happy Anniversary to us, the beauty of us- as-is and forevermore.”
