Jessica Simpson Confesses To Having Two Tummy Tucks: 'I Couldn’t Bear To Look At Myself'

Jessica Simpson has always been open about her personal life. From baring all in the MTV show “Newlyweds” with ex-husband Nick Lachey to candid interviews about her struggles with substance abuse and weight, the singer has always been an advocate for positive body image.

She has now admitted to having had two surgeries in her quest to find the perfect body shape and has written about it in her book as a way to put that chapter in her life behind her for good.

Her memoir, “Open Book,” which was published in February this year, reveals a lot about the 40-year-old’s tumultuous early life, and the pressures she’s faced with alcohol abuse, diet pills, and surgery, on her journey to achieve a body she felt happy with.

One of her lowest points came in 2015, after the birth of her second child with husband Eric Johnson, 41. Simpson told ET, “I was so ashamed of my body at this point that I wouldn’t let Eric see me without a white T-shirt on…I even showered with it on. I couldn’t bear to look at myself.”

It was this feeling of shame about her body that led her to have her first surgery: a partial tummy tuck. “That was after I lost a ton of weight and I had skin and stretch marks because I had two babies back-to-back, 14 months apart,” she said, speaking about how much weight she had gained during her pregnancies. Her doctor warned her against going ahead with the wishes as it carried health risks because of her liver levels due to her increased alcohol consumption.

In an interview with ET from earlier this year, Simpson confessed to having had another surgery after the first because she wasn’t completely happy with the results. The second surgery was more invasive and unfortunately didn’t have the desired results.

She recalled: “The surgery took two hours longer than planned…It did not go well. I got an infection—colitis—and was vomiting so much I thought I was going to bust my sutures. My mom and Eric were so worried. They had to rush me to Cedars, and I secretly stayed there for nine days. Doctors talked seriously about me needing a blood transfusion.”

Even as a teenager Simpson was shown how brutal the music industry can be. According to the Daily Mail, in 1997, when she was just 17 years old, the CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, Tommy Mottola, told her she would need to "lose fifteen pounds" if she wanted to make it. This triggered an unhealthy dysmorphia.

Simpson began taking diet pills and unfortunately developed an addiction to them that would span the next two decades. She also tried out different diets, including the Atkins diet.

“Off the diet, I obsessed over how I looked 24/7; on the diet, I was also hyper-focused on food. It made me nervous. My anxiety had something to hold on to, and instead of examining my emotions, I could just block them out by focusing on carb counts and waist sizes. If I focused on controlling my outward appearance, I could avoid thinking about my emotions and fears,” she wrote.

In 2017, Simpson realized she needed to change her life around decided to become sober. She confessed to People, “When I finally said I needed help, it was like I was that little girl that found her calling again in life…I found direction and that was to walk straight ahead with no fear.”

After giving birth to three children in the space of 10 years, her body was put through many natural and healthy changes—something women should never be ashamed of. Simpson is mom to 8-year-old Maxwell Drew Johnson, 6-year-old Ace Knute Johnson, and her youngest, 1-year-old Birdie Mae Johnson. After the birth of her third child, Birdie Mae in 2019, Simpson worked closely with her longtime fitness coach, Harley Pasternak, to undergo a healthy transformation ahead of her 40th birthday earlier this year.

She also released new music at the same time as the launch of her book. 2020 truly has been a year of change and reflection for the singer. "It’s been a long, hard, deeply emotional journey, one that I’ve come through the other side with pure happiness and fulfillment and acceptance of myself. I’ve used my pain and turned it into something that can be beautiful and hopefully inspiring to people," Simpson told People.

We have no doubt that Jessica Simpson’s family is extremely proud of her, and we can’t wait to see what next year will bring!
