Jennifer Lopez’s Daughter Emme Sparks Heated Reactions Online Over Her Fashion Choices

Everyone loves Jennifer Lopez; she stole the nation's hearts with her performance in the 1997 hit biopic "Selena" and hasn't stopped since. Lopez, born in 1969, is thought to be the most influential Latin performer in the world. Her movies have grossed over $3 billion, and she has sold around 80 million copies of her musical recordings worldwide.

In addition to performing, she has clothing lines, perfumes, and a charity that provides medical care to disadvantaged children. Lopez founded the charity after her child, Emme, developed a peculiar bump on her head. Although the condition was easily treated, the mother of two realized that many children lacked access to health care.

This led her to establish the Lopez Family Foundation shortly after that. In detail, the foundation promotes the use of telemedicine to allow sick children to be treated by medical experts regardless of where the child and the expert are physically located.

The star has incredible skills: singing, dancing, acting and producing. However, you may not know that she has twin daughters. When she married Marc Anthony in 2004, Lopez had fraternal twins, Emme and Maximilian. She and Anthony split up in 2011, with the divorce finalized in 2014, and Lopez got primary custody of the twins.

As the twins have matured, it is uncanny how much Emme looks like their mother. Max looks a bit more like a merging of his two parents. Lopez says she loves her twins and how they help balance her life. She also really likes how deeply bonded the two children are. Because of her busy schedule, her family primarily cares for her kids, as she chooses not to hire a nanny. The children are allowed to "schedule" quality time with their mother, and as they have grown up, they are allowed to pick what activity they want to do with Lopez. For example, Max once scheduled a picnic with Lopez. In February 2022, Lopez opened up about how things have changed as the twins age. She said:

"They're going to be 14 in a couple of days, and they have opinions about the world and their lives. And now they see their dad, me as well, we're in the public eye, what that means, what that means for them, school, everything."

Lopez knows she must protect her children now that they live in the public eye. 

"It's a lot of things. You have to be conscious, too, like what you talk about from your private life in public because they'll read it, their friends will read it, these things will happen, all these judgments made."

Not only does Lopez have to protect her kids from the tabloids and paparazzi, but she must also keep them safe online. She stated: "Social media is so different now," then explained:

"It's not just tabloid magazines, like if you happen to pick it up. Everybody can see everything you say all the time, so it's just about being respectful to them, too, and loving them and protecting them, and protecting our family and our love, that's all."

Emme is also showcasing her mother's talents. Their proud mom has released a video of the child happily singing in a Christmas pageant. The teen has also said that making an album with their mother "would be a very cool experience," and added: "That'd be great." In addition, the little girl has written a book called "Lord Help Me," which was published in 2020. This is quite an achievement for a child at her age. However, it is par for the course with a mother as hard-working and talented as Lopez.

The mother of two had previously been in the news for her rekindled relationship with Ben Affleck. The attention was something that the star was trying to keep her kids away from at that time. Lopez shared:

"I think when Ben and I were younger and we were together, it was something that we were just kind of out there with our relationship, and when something is sacred like that you put it out there. ... It's yours to do with what you want."

When the couple first dated from 2002 to 2004, they were very open about their love, and Affleck even appeared in Lopez's music videos. But before they separated in 2024, the pair did their best to keep details under wraps. Lopez said:

"I think we're older now, we have kids, and we have a different sense of responsibility, and we have a lot more experience and we're just in a different place in our life. We're going to try to keep as much as we can sharing our happiness, but at the same time keeping it very sacred and close to our own hearts."

In an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today Show, Lopez talked about the woes of raising teenagers:

"They’re 15 and they’re teenagers. They’re giving it to me!"

She stated:

"They’re like challenging everything (...) which is great, I think, for our world. I think they’re gonna change the world, to be quite honest.” 

She also furthered her parenting woes in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe:

“The minute you say any new word to them, they look (…) any new name, any new—anything! Any new information they want to know what it is and they know they can and so, they’re much more informed."

On Feb. 23, 2024, she posted a video on Instagram of a trip she took with her children, Emme and Max, to Japan to celebrate their 16th birthday. While the recording was such a beautiful moment, many felt the need to comment on Emme’s appearance and clothing choice. Emme, who seemed comfortable wearing gender-neutral clothing, received criticism from Lopez’s fans. One fan said:

“I love Jlo, but come on, can you play dress your daughter appropriate for her age, I feel like the clothes she wears is made for older people. Jlo can wear all the nice and pretty stuff, why not do that for your kids.” 

Another critic added:

“@jlo is that your son or your daughter? Can't even tell. Why your kids dress and look like that ???”

Many, however, defended Emme and Lopez, saying she was just a kid and should dress however she wanted. Some were divided on who Emme and Max look like more—Lopez or their father, Anthony. One user said:

“Max is a true copy of his father Marc Anthony! They are identical 😮”

Another commented:

“Wow She looks like Mama and he looks like Dad ♥️.”
