Jennifer Lopez Was Ready To ‘Give Up On It All’ After Divorcing Marc Anthony Until Famous Mentor Said This To Her

Jennifer Lopez has always moved forward, no matter what life threw at her. And on the night of March 6, 2026, standing on stage at her Up All Night Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, she gave her audience a rare glimpse into just how hard that forward motion has sometimes been.
The “On the Floor” singer, 56, reflected on her seven-year marriage to Marc Anthony, whom she divorced in 2014, with surprising warmth. Despite the pain of their split, Lopez has never shied away from crediting Anthony for what he gave her during their time together. In a December 2018 interview with Sunday Today host Willie Geist, she opened up about how much he had shaped her confidence.
“While I was married to Marc, he really helped me with my confidence, and he saw where I suffered,” she said. Anthony, she recalled, would constantly remind her: “You’re a great singer. Don’t ever let anybody tell you you’re not a great singer.” The admiration, it turns out, was completely mutual. “I respected him so much because I consider him one of the best singers of all time,” she added.
Their bond didn’t dissolve with the divorce either. After collaborating with Anthony on her Spanish-language album “Por Primera Vez” years later, Lopez told Spotify’s ¡Viva Latino! podcast in November 2017 that working together “actually repaired certain parts of our relationship that had been fractured from our marriage and our divorce, and it made us friends again.” The reason was simple: “We met working. And so we remembered that, like, oh right, we connect on this level of music.”

But behind the sold-out residencies and the graceful public narrative, Lopez has carried a secret she’s only begun to share. The months following her divorce from Anthony were far darker than anyone watching from the outside could have guessed.
Standing before her Las Vegas crowd, the “Kiss of the Spider Woman“ star didn’t hold back.
“I mean, I was a single mom with two 3-year-old twins,” she said in a video shared on Instagram, referring to the 18-year-old twins Max and Emme she shares with Anthony, 57. And then came the admission that stunned the room: “I was really about to give up on it all.”
What pulled her back was a conversation with one of her mentors, the late author Louise Hay, who offered her a piece of wisdom framed in the most Lopez way possible.
“She said to me, ‘Jennifer, you’re a dancer, right?’ I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ And she said, ‘When you’re learning a dance and you get the steps wrong, what do you do?’ I said, ‘I just keep going until I get the steps right.’ And she said, ‘That’s right Jennifer. Always keep dancing.’”
Lopez brought that message straight to her audience, pointing to the crowd as she spoke. “I wish the same for each and every one of you, that no matter what life throws at you, that you dance and you dance and you dance. Again and again and again.”
From the edge of giving up to headlining Vegas and rebuilding one of her most complicated relationships, Lopez has done exactly that. She kept dancing — and she clearly has no intention of stopping.
