Even after their separation, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez continued to demonstrate admiration and support for one another’s creative work. Their relationship, though no longer romantic, has evolved into one defined by respect and mutual encouragement. On Oct. 6, 2025, this connection was clear at the New York City premiere of Lopez’s film “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” where Affleck made a surprise appearance to celebrate her accomplishment and the project they helped bring to life together.

The film, directed by Bill Condon, is a reimagining of the 1993 Broadway musical and the 1985 film of the same name, adapted initially from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. The film featured Lopez alongside Diego Luna and Tonatiuh, with Lopez portraying a “silver screen diva” named Ingrid Luna. The production premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters on Oct. 10, 2025. The project not only represented a major milestone in Lopez’s career but also served as a reminder of the enduring friendship that continues to connect her and Affleck beyond their romantic past.

Affleck and Lopez share a long history that has captivated the public since the early 2000s. The two first met in 2002 while filming “Gigli,” a romantic comedy that quickly made them one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples. Their chemistry both on and off the screen led to an engagement in 2003, but they called it off in early 2004, citing overwhelming media scrutiny. In the years that followed, both found success in their careers and started families with other partners, seemingly closing that chapter of their lives.

However, nearly two decades later, Lopez and Affleck reunited in 2021 and rekindled their romance. In July 2022, the couple married in a private Las Vegas ceremony, followed by a larger celebration in Georgia a month later. Despite their efforts to make their relationship work the second time around, they ultimately divorced in February 2025, citing irreconcilable differences.

Their ability to remain supportive of one another has set them apart from many celebrity exes, especially at the premiere of “Kiss of the Spider Woman” in New York City. The film, co-produced by Affleck and Matt Damon through their company Artists Equity, featured Lopez in the starring role.

Before the screening, Lopez publicly thanked Affleck for his contribution to the production.

“Thank you so much, thank you everybody for being here tonight. Thank you, Ben, this movie wouldn’t have been made without Ben and without Artists Equity,” she said.

She went on to describe her excitement upon first reading the script.

“I read the script, if you know, I was in bed and I was just floored,” she exclaimed, adding, “I was just like could this be happening right now. I get to sing, I get to dance, I get to act. I get to be an old-time Hollywood movie star.”

In a later interview on the “Today Show,” Lopez reaffirmed her appreciation for Affleck's involvement. “If it wasn’t for Ben, the movie wouldn’t have gotten made,” she shared, adding, "And I will always give him that credit.”

During the TV appearance, Lopez said, “Things happen, you have to keep going,” in reference to their divorce. She also noted how working on the film has been a healing experience.

“It’s funny, the movie is about escapism. It’s about how movies and art save us in the hardest times of our lives. Doing this project was such a dream come true for me that it really got me through to kind of survive a moment that was difficult in my personal life as well.”
