Jennifer Garner Calls To 'Normalize Looking Normal' And Gives Advice For Battling Inner Demons

Jennifer Garner has been a notable actress for several years, finding her claim to fame during the early 2000s. Not only was she a household name thanks to her performance in the hit television show "Alias," but she also starred in a number of successful films during that time as well, such as "Pearl Harbor," Catch Me If You Can" and "13 Going On 30." While Garner has certainly made her mark on the entertainment world due to her acting abilities, it's her charisma and beautiful personality that has continued to make her one of the most beloved actresses in the world.

Throughout her time in the spotlight, Garner has shown just how beautiful she is both with her outward appearance and with her actions. She is a mother of three: son Samuel Garner Affleck and daughters Violet Anne Affleck and Seraphina Rose Elizabeth Affleck, whose father is Ben Affleck. While she has previously spoken out about her hope to normalize post-pregnancy bodies being seen as normal, the 49-year-old actress has once again spoken out about her hopes to change the way people view beauty.

Nowadays, Garner has expressed that she wants to normalize looking normal and help people understand that the way she looks in movies or television shows is not how she typically looks. She has a very simple beauty routine and doesn't put too much stress on herself to look perfect. Garner also hopes to be a good role model to her three children and show them that normal is beautiful.

Her Low-Key Approach To Beauty

On a March 2021 episode of Giovanna Fletcher's "Happy Mum, Happy Baby" podcast, Garner talked about her life as a mom and her post-baby body. She explained that while some women are able to "bounce back" immediately after having kids, she's not one of them. Garner explained, "It's incredible. I have so many girlfriends who have that physique and I'm so happy for them." She added, "I am not one of them. That is not my gig."

This wasn't the only time Garner talked about the idea of normalizing the normalness of all bodies and physical appearances. In December 2021, TODAY reported just how simple Garner's beauty regimen is and how much she wants to normalize the idea of celebrities – and anyone else for that matter – looking normal rather than perfectly glammed up all of the time.

The 49-year-old actress is absolutely stunning and is known for being extremely down-to-earth and personable. She is also pretty "low-key" with her beauty routine and is involved with the haircare brand called Virtue, which she joined back in 2019, according to TODAY.

When it comes to wearing makeup, Garner has a 'less-is-more' approach. "We can almost all wear less than we think because, to me, I don't want my kids or people to only see the actor version of me that is perfectly made up by brilliant artists and think that's how I look," Garner said. "I want to look normal and I want to normalize looking normal. I always have felt really strongly about that. And then if I'm dressed up, I like that my kids are like, 'Woo, look at my mom!'"

Trying To Not Criticize Herself

For Garner, a typical makeup look consists of only the essentials, such as concealer, blush, mascara, and something on her lips. However, her approach to makeup has definitely changed over the years, as the actress was once a huge fan of the dolled-up look.

"When I was in college, and I'm sure after college, my idea of makeup was what I would wear if I was doing a ballet recital or the Nutcracker," she said. "I had very light-colored pancake makeup, and seriously, you could see where my chin met my neck… it was atrocious." Garner continued, "It's really made any picture from college unusable because if I thought I needed to look nice, that's what I did. I literally opened up my fishing tackle box of theater makeup and just went at it."

Fortunately, nowadays, Garner has a better approach to combatting self-criticism by choosing to ignore the bad photos of her that are released to the public. "I try to not see unflattering pictures of myself because I know I look better in real life than paparazzi pictures make me look, and if I don't, I don't want to know it," she explained.

Garner also has tips for anyone struggling with their own feelings toward themselves and their appearances and encourages people to spend time away from looking at their reflection in the mirror. "When you start getting super critical of yourself, turn around, pivot in that spot and go do something nice for someone else," the actress said. "Or go work out, or just take that and make it active instead of letting it just fester in you."
