Jay Leno is an American comedian, television host, and writer. After working for many years as a stand-up comedian, he became the host of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” He worked on the series from 1992 to 2009. In September 2009, Leno premiered his own series, “The Jay Leno Show,” which was canceled a year later.

After that experience, Leno went back to hosting “The Tonight Show” until 2014. This decision led to some controversy for him as Conan O’Brien had already been promised the position. That same year, Leno was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.

He is currently the host of the show “Jay Leno’s Garage,” which is a series about cars and motorcycles that showcases Leno’s love for automobiles. Leno is known for his extensive car and motorcycle collection and has been working on cars since he was a kid.

Leno was born in 1950 in New Rochelle, New York. His mother was from Scotland, and his father was of Italian descent. The comedian grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and learned how to fix a lawnmower by the age of 11. Since then, he has been obsessed with fixing cars.

Leno’s other love in life is his wife, Mavis. The couple has been married since 1980 and is still happily together in 2021. The host has shared his secrets to a happy marriage over the years and has some romantic things to say about love. Leno once compared his work in the film and television industry to that of fixing a car. He said to the Wall Street Journal:

“I work in a business that’s subjective. Some people think you suck, and some people think you’re great. The problem is, they’re both correct. But it’s different with a car: When you take something that’s broken and you make it run, no one can say you didn’t fix it. I work at night in my head trying to say things, and in the day I work putting things together. It’s a nice sense of balance.”

He added, “Interviewing people taught me to be a way better listener. Most people aren’t really listening and have no idea how to carry on a conversation. They’re waiting for people to stop talking so they can start. I’m generally interested in what people have to say. I’m not that interested in my side of the story.”

Leno worked for years doing stand-up comedy and was considered one of the best. “Being a comedian is about learning how to compartmentalize your brain. When you’re doing stand-up, you might see a guy in the audience and then think of a joke about him while you’re saying something else. But it appears so spontaneous,” he shared.

Speaking on the subject of marriage with the Wall Street Journal, Leno said, “I always tell people that you should marry the person you wish you could have been. That’s a pretty good goal.” He adds that he’s learned an important lesson: “The secret to a long marriage is realizing there’s nothing really worth fighting about.”

Leno also mentioned that he looks to his wife for guidance when challenges arise in his life. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Leno said:

“You should always marry your conscience. By that I mean, in show business, it happens in sports and politics, too, you go through the usual avarice, and you need someone who will go, ‘What are you doing? You don’t act like this.’ If you wind up with someone who enjoys those things, you go to hell pretty much together. I spent half of my life trying not to disappoint my mother and the other half trying not to disappoint my wife. I mean, you have to respect the standard. You need to be able to look in the mirror.”

The two love birds shared the story of their love with the LA times, and Mavis remembered the night she first met her husband. She said, “I had gone to the Comedy Store with my girlfriend because I was writing comedy with some partners. Friends kept saying, You have to hang out at the Comedy Store and The Improv you’ll meet people who can give you jobs. The first time I went, they sat us front row center that means you’re this far from the comic. And there was Jay.” They have been together since.

According to People, Leno follows his own advice, too, and admits that when he’s spending time with his wife, it’s never stressful because they have so much in common. “I’m a big car and motorcycle guy. My wife likes to travel,” he gushed. “We have a good time!”
