Jason Momoa And Lisa Bonet’s Deep Love Lives On Through Friendship: 'We're Not Back Together, We're Famiily'

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet were one of the most influential power couples in Hollywood. The couple announced their split in January 2022, shocking fans and the media across the globe. Momoa and Bonet were together for almost 16 years, and together they are parents to Nakoa-Wolf, 14, and Lola, 15.

To understand how and why the couple decided to end their relationship, it’s easier to look back at how it all started. Both Momoa and Bonet are accomplished in their careers. Bonet was one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and she has been nominated for four Young Artist Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award and a Saturn Award.

Momoa made his Hollywood debut a little later, starring in "Baywatch: Hawaii" in 1999. Today, Momoa is best known for his roles as Aquaman in the DC Universe and Khal Drogo in the first two seasons of HBO’s hit series, "Game of Thrones."

The couple met in 2004, but Momoa’s crush on Bonet began years before. In an interview on James Cordon’s "The Late Late Show," Momoa said he had been crushing on the actress since the first time he saw her on "The Cosby Show." For Momoa, it was love at first sight.

“Ever since I was like, 8 years old and I saw her on the TV, I was like, ‘Mommy, I want that one,’” Momoa said. “I’m like, ‘I’m going to stalk you for the rest of my life and I’m going to get you.’” The story of the two of them getting together is quite amazing.

One day in 2004, a mutual friend of both Momoa and Bonet offered to introduce them at a jazz club in New York. Momoa said that he was so excited, he changed his hair to match Bonet’s before they met.

"We just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I actually had dreaded my hair for her. I had dreadlocks, she had dreadlocks. I literally turned around and I see her and she goes, ‘I’m Lisa.’ I turned around to my friend and I (pretends to scream). I had fireworks going off inside, man,” Momoa said.

From that day on, the pair were inseparable. Though Bonet didn’t echo Momoa’s feelings of love at first sight, she said in a 2018 interview with Porter Magazine that their relationship began the very same day they met.

Momoa asked her for a ride home from the bar, and on the way, they stopped to get a beer. She said that when they were running back to the car, she realized that he was different from the other men she knew.

“In that moment, love came and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do,” she said. “He basically picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, caveman style!”

On July 21, 2007, the couple welcomed their first child, daughter Lola. In December 2008, their second child, son Nakoa-Wolf, was born. Bonet had her first daughter, actress Zoë Kravitz, in 1988, with her first husband, Lenny Kravitz.

Momoa and Bonet got married in early October 2017. They invited their close friends and family to an intimate ceremony at their home in Topanga, California. A traditional Māori haka was performed for the couple at the wedding.

The same year, Momoa said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that to him, the wedding was just a formality and that he felt he had been married to Bonet the entire time he had known her.

“You know what, I've been married to my wife for 12 years,” he said. “It’s just a gathering of our families and celebrating our love.”

Over the years, the couple was public with their love and affection for one another. They even worked together for a short time. The couple co-starred together in the film "Road to Paloma" in 2014, where he played the role of a man who is on the run after killing his mother, and Bonet played his love interest. In 2014, the pair also worked together on the Sundance TV series "The Red Road."

All of this is why the couple’s split came as such a shock. But an anonymous source told PEOPLE that the tension between the couple had been building for some time. The source went on to explain that each of them was in completely different places in their careers, which made it difficult for them to spend time together.

“A few years ago, Jason was struggling to find work. Now his career is booming. And he wants to keep working as much as he can,” the source said.

The pair planned to keep co-parenting and respecting one another following their split. Despite rumors of a reconciliation earlier in 2022, Momoa set the record straight when he told Access Hollywood, "We're not back together, we're family."

Since they're family, it's not surprising then that the former couple spent part of the 2022 holidays together because of their children. A source told PEOPLE they're "friends" and added:

"They spend time together when Jason is in Los Angeles. Jason is handy and often did things around the house when they lived together. ... He still helps Lisa out now."
