After 16 years together and four years of marriage, Jason Momoa and his wife Lisa Bonet are “parting ways.” The couple made the announcement in a joint statement posted to Momoa’s Instagram on Wednesday, Jan. 12.

“We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding ~and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring,” Momoa and Bonet began the post.

“And so~ We share our Family news~ That we are parting ways in marriage. We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy ~ But so that~ as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty. The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other ~to be who we are learning to become…” they continued.

Momoa met Bonet for the first time in 2005, though the “Aquaman” star has said that he’s had a crush on her since he was a kid.

"Ever since I was, like, 8 years old and I saw her on the TV, and I was like, 'Mommy, I want that one' I'm like, 'I'm gonna stalk you for the rest of my life, and I'm gonna get you,'" Momoa joked on "The Late Late Show” in 2017.

Nearly two decades later, Momoa and Bonet ran into each other at a jazz club. In the same talk show interview, Momoa explained how he asked Bonet for a ride home, which turned into drinks at a bar.

"I can't say it was full-on from the moment we saw each other, but we have been together from the day that we met," Bonet said in a 2018 interview with Porter magazine. "In that moment, love came and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do. He basically picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, caveman style."

Just two years after meeting in 2005, Momoa and Bonet had their first child together, Lola.

"I really can't tell you what the hell I was doing before I had kids," Momoa told Men's Health in 2016. "Wasting time. I think I was pretty reckless and definitely a bit out of control. Now I'm more focused. I probably love myself more and take care of myself more because I want to stick around."

The Hollywood couple welcomed their second child, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, in 2009.

After having two children, the couple finally tied the knot in a secret ceremony in 2017.

"You know what, I've been married to my wife for 12 years," Momoa said of his wedding, referring to how long he and Bonet had been together. "It's just a gathering of our families and celebrating our love."

And since then, their relationship seemed stronger than ever.

“Jason is an alpha male who stands for love and family. Having an absent father, then to be fully met by a man of that stature, is really incredible,” Bonet said of her husband in 2019.

“Jason embodies a rare form of masculinity in this day and age – he’s a leader; he’s generous. Just in terms of charisma, physique, the right use of power, responsibility, work ethic, you can go down the line,” the actress added

In 2020, the couple even starred in a Superbowl commercial together. Their relationship’s apparent strength makes Wednesday’s announcement even more shocking and unexpected.

Fans from around the world reacted to the couple’s breakup on social media.

“They had such a cute story. She was his childhood crush, said he would marry her one day & then did. Their family dynamics seemed so heathy & positive. Wishing them all the best in the next stage of their lives,” Heather Best tweeted in response to the news.

“16 years especially in Hollyweird is an eternity. Props to them for making it work for a good while. Sucks it ended; but maybe it was for the best? I wish them well now & hope they can healthily co-parent their 2 lovely kids,” another fan tweeted.

Meanwhile, other fans seemed a little bit too happy about the news.

“Jason Momoa is single?!?! Wow,” one popular tweet reads.

Bonet was previously married to Lenny Kravitz for six years between 1987 and 1993.

"I think I just wasn't ready,” Kravitz said of his relationship.

"I had to take a break. I went through a lot of emotional things, a lot of deaths in my family. But now, I would love to be married. It just has to be the right person, at the right time."

Kravitz and Bonet had one child together, the “Big Little Lies” actress Zoë Kravitz.
