Jason Momoa Admitted He ‘Didn’t Know’ What It Takes ‘To Be A Dad’

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet have been the topic of headlines for several months following the announcement of the end of their marriage back in January 2022. While the two have seemingly gone back and forth on what they want to do with their relationship moving forward, what’s clear is that they will also need to figure out how to co-parent their two shared children.

Momoa is an actor and filmmaker who has been a prominent figure in the entertainment industry since the late 1990s. He made his acting debut in the action-drama series “Baywatch: Hawaii” in 1999 and stayed on the show until 2001. A few years later, Momoa went on to star in the science fiction series “Stargate Atlantis.” He found even more fame when he was cast as Khal Drogo in the first two seasons of “Game of Thrones” – a show that helped catapult the careers of many of its stars.

Today, Momoa is best known for his role as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe. He has already portrayed the hero in a couple of movies and is set to star in more in the upcoming years. Momoa also reached an even higher level of success thanks to the film “Dune.”

While Momoa has had some ups and downs in his personal life, he has also had some wonderful milestones. He is a father of two and has learned a lot about parenting over the years. However, the actor once doubted that he had the skills to be a good father.

Momoa and Bonet were one of the most influential power couples in Hollywood. However, the couple shocked the world when they announced their split in January, as they were together for almost 16 years and are parents to Nakoa-Wolf, 13, and Lola, 14.

Momoa and Bonet posted:

“We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding ~and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring. And so~ We share our Family news~ That we are parting ways in marriage. We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy ~ But so that~ as we go about our lives, we may do so with dignity and honesty. The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other ~to be who we are learning to become….”

While there were previous rumors that the couple has since reconciled and chose to work on their marriage, Page Six reported that this was not the case. “We’re not back together,” Momoa said. “We’re family… We have two beautiful children together.”

It’s clear that Momoa has been honest about his personal struggles and opened up about the doubts he faced when it came to starting a family and becoming a father. On July 21, 2007, he and Bonet welcomed their first child together – a daughter named Lola. In December 2008, the couple welcomed their second child – a son named Nakoa-Wolf. Bonet previously had a daughter, actress Zoë Kravitz, with her first husband, Lenny Kravitz.

According to InStyle, Momoa struggled to figure out how to be a dad as he grew up without a father at home. “I didn’t know what it takes to be a dad,” he said. “And I don’t want to just tell my son, ‘Because I said so.’ I really want to connect, and I want him to be vulnerable and open.”

Momoa also talked about overcoming his insecurities. “I mean, I’m a warrior, and I will lay it down,” he said. “But I’m also the first one to say, ‘I have a lot of problems, and I want to be able to correct those problems.’”

As someone so famous, Momoa knows all the ups and downs the entertainment industry contains and said that he is “not a fan” of his kids becoming actors, according to Us Weekly. Instead, he wants to do what he can to keep his children as protected as possible.

Momoa explained:

“I love storytelling, I love theatrical things, I like directing and filmmaking, but I just want them to, you know, really to go for other things… It’s very hard on people and I don’t want them to have that pressure. I’m tough, I can handle it, but I wouldn’t want to put someone I love (through) that.”

It’s clear that Momoa’s children mean the world to him; he even has their names tattooed on his chest right over his heart, according to InStyle. What makes the tattoos even more special is that they were written in Nakoa-Wolf and Lola’s handwriting from when they were kids.
