Jason Bateman Recalls Turning The Tables On ‘Little House On The Prairie’ Castmates Who ‘Hazed’ Him As A Kid

Jason Bateman revisited his early acting days, looking back at the mix of fun and challenges he experienced on “Little House on the Prairie.” On Sept. 18, 2025, the award-winning actor appeared on “Hot Ones,” a YouTube series hosted by Sean Evans, where celebrities answer questions while eating progressively spicier chicken wings.

Bateman, who portrayed James Cooper Ingalls, the second adopted son of Charles and Caroline Ingalls, in seasons seven and eight of the classic drama, reflected on his time as a young actor on the set of one of television’s most beloved family shows.

Bateman’s early years on the show marked the beginning of a prolific acting career that started when he was just 11 years old. From commercials to starring roles in acclaimed shows and films, his journey from child actor to Hollywood mainstay reflects a lifelong ability to balance humor, humility, and heart.

During the conversation, Evans brought up a long-circulating rumor from Bateman’s time on the series, asking whether “the older kids in the cast played an April Fool’s joke on you by telling you that your character had died.” The actor was quick to comment on the story, clarifying what actually happened. It seems there were many mischievous moments behind the scenes. Bateman revealed that the older cast members once decided to roughhouse with him during filming, which led to one particularly memorable incident.

Evans seemed surprised by the story and asked in disbelief, “There was a hazing ritual on ‘Little House on the Prairie’?” The actor confirmed that there had indeed been some playful but intense teasing among the young cast members and recounted the full events of the story.

“Untrue,” Bateman said of the April Fool’s rumor and continued: “What they did do is they pinned me down on the ground, straddled me with knees on my shoulders and gave me noogies or whatever they call it on my chest.”

Laughing, he added: “They knocked on my chest like I was a front door.” But rather than taking it lying down, Bateman decided to get even.

“I went to the makeup artist and said, ‘Put a big black-and-blue mark all over my chest,’” he recalled, adding, “And then I went to their parents and I said, ‘Look what your kids did to me.’ And that was good. I got them in trouble.”

Evans couldn’t help but laugh, noting that Bateman clearly “got the last laugh.” Bateman replied that he “got skills” with a smirk.

The story of the prank may have been lighthearted. Still, the second half of Bateman’s reflections offered a look at the lessons he learned from the people who helped shape his early career, particularly Michael Landon, the star and creative force behind “Little House on the Prairie.”

In a February 2025 appearance on “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” on SiriusXM, Bateman spoke warmly about the late actor and filmmaker.

“Michael Landon was the director, executive producer, star, writer. Everybody loved him,” he said.

Drawing a modern comparison, he added: “George Clooney would be the perfect comparison today. His ease with people, with the process, with the business, with Joe on the street. Women are crazy about him. Guys wanna be his buddy.”

Bateman continued:

“Watching him juggle all those balls and be this leader and presence on a set and be kind with people, but also be kind of a stern boss if he needs to, that was pretty inspirational.”

His admiration for Landon’s leadership underscored the impact those early experiences had on his understanding of professionalism, kindness, and authority in the entertainment industry.
