Janet Jackson Makes a Rare Red Carpet Appearance in a Custom Christian Siriano Gown to Honor Missy Elliott

Janet Jackson attended the Dancers Against Cancer Gala of the Stars at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on October 22 — and she did not go unnoticed.

Jackson, 60, wore a custom Christian Siriano gown: a floor-length black lace dress with a formfitting silhouette, structured shoulders with an extra layer of black lace, a plunging keyhole neckline, and a skirt that swept to the floor in a puddle at her feet. The lace was semi-sheer, laid over nude-toned lining, with allover scalloped motifs and botanical patterning that WWD described as channeling “Victorian-inspired style cues of the ongoing dark glamour trend.” She completed the look with large gold-toned oval earrings, statement rings, a metallic gold manicure, a wine-colored lip, and her highlighted hair swept back in loose waves.

Siriano confirmed the collaboration with characteristic enthusiasm. “When JANET calls you make her a fabulous lace gown duh!!” he wrote.

Fan reaction was immediate. “She is literally aging in reverse,” one wrote. “Beautiful” and “stunning” circulated widely. The appearance was notable not just for the dress but for its rarity — Jackson’s last red carpet before this was the 2026 BET Awards in June, making this only her second major public appearance of the year.

She was there to honor a friend. Jackson presented Missy Elliott with the Dancers Against Cancer Icon Award — the same award Jackson herself had received at the 2025 Gala, where she wore a sleek black Tom Ford satin gown. This year, she was in the seat of the person doing the honoring.

The gala also recognized Toni Basil, Hilaria Baldwin, Vincent Paterson, and the late Chita Rivera among its honorees.

For Elliott, the Dancers Against Cancer Icon Award recognized a career that has reshaped popular music and its relationship to choreography and visual performance. Her videos — directed largely by Hype Williams and Dave Meyers — changed what a music video could look and move like. Her presence in Jackson’s world is long-established: both women are among the most influential figures in the history of Black American music and performance.

Jackson introduced Elliott before presenting the award, describing her as someone who “elevated choreography, embraced individuality, and inspired generations of dancers to dream bigger.” The speech received sustained applause. “That influence lives far beyond a single song or a single performance,” Jackson said. “It lives in every artist who feels a little braver because Missy showed them what was possible.”

Elliott responded in kind. In an emotional post following the evening, she wrote: “Dear @janetjackson we have been friends way over two decades, & I still am one of your BIGGEST fans! Of course, I’m a fan of your music, BUT I’m the biggest fan of YOU, the PERSON! With all that you’ve done globally, you have NEVER been loudest in the room, but those in the room know you are MOTHA! Your SELFLESSNESS & HUMILITY should be studied! Your beauty outside matches the INSIDE!”

Jackson received the award in 2025. A year later she came back to give it to someone she has known for over 20 years. The tribute ran both ways.
