Jamie Lee Curtis Says Her Child Is Transgender

In the August/September issue of AARP Magazine, Jamie Lee Curtis revealed that her youngest child, whom she had with filmmaker Christopher Guest, is a transgender woman. Curtis shared the information about her 25-year-old daughter, Ruby, after asking for her permission. The magazine further reported that Ruby plans to get married to her fiance in a wedding next year, which Curtis plans to officiate. Curtis’ youngest daughter works as a game designer, whereas the eldest, 34-year-old Annie, is a dance instructor.

The AARP profile doesn’t just focus on Curtis’ children, however. The 62-year-old star, known for her role in the horror classic “Halloween,” also opened up about her problems with addiction, her love for the novelist E.L. Doctorow, her podcast “Good Friends” and her production company.

Curtis, who lives in Los Angeles, has never been a stranger when it comes to show business. In fact, she was born into the dazzling world of cinema; her parents, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, both had successful careers as actors, starring in “Some Like It Hot” and “Psycho," respectively. But Curtis took a more circuitous route to become an actress, despite her upbringing among Hollywood stars.

After graduating from a prestigious boarding school in Connecticut, Curtis enrolled at the University of the Pacific, though she didn’t stay long. It was there that Curtis decided to become an actress, auditioning for the part of Nancy Drew. While Curtis didn’t get the part, she was set on the path of becoming a star, and so she dropped out of college. While it might have seemed like a mistake at the time, Curtis’ breakthrough role in “Halloween” would launch her career sky high.

Today, Curtis is watching as her own children’s lives transform, as they find their careers and ways in life. Speaking to her daughter Ruby’s decision to come out as a transgender woman, Curtis told AARP that she understands that gender isn’t fixed, adding that life is a “constant metamorphosis.”

Curtis continued by saying that she and her husband “have watched in wonder and pride as our son became our daughter Ruby.”

“And she and her fiancé will get married next year at a wedding that I will officiate,” Curtis added.

Speaking of love and transformations, the AARP profile also speaks to Curtis’ own romance with Christopher Guest, with whom she had Ruby and Annie. Five months after she saw Guest’s photo in a magazine, the couple was married, as she elaborated in a 2015 interview.

“I married Chris five months after seeing his picture in Rolling Stone. I said out loud to my friend, the late, great Debra Hill, ‘Oh, I’m going to marry that guy,’” Curtis explained in a conversation with Sigourney Weaver for Interview Magazine.

“It was a picture of Chris with Michael McKean and Harry Shearer from ‘Spinal Tap’, but just as regular guys. Debra said, ‘Oh, I know him, and he’s with your agency. I tried to get him in a movie.’ So I called the agent, left my number, but Chris never called me. And then I ran into him at a restaurant.”

In her interview with AARP, she explained that her love hasn’t faltered as she enters her twilight years. She even goes as far as to describe herself as “a deep, serious romantic.”

And given that Curtis wrote Guest a song for their 35th wedding anniversary with the adorable lyrics, “I feel safe when I drive up and see that you are home,” it seems like these two really are in love.

“That's the long marriage. It's the safety of knowing his car is in the garage, that I'm not alone, and that he's here,” she explained.

As for what Curtis is doing now that she’s found the perfect man and has two grown-up daughters, the 62-year-old actress told AARP Magazine that she’s keeping busy.

On top of her acting career, Curtis has her own production company, Comet Pictures, which is producing a TV show based on Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels and is set to produce its first feature film. Curtis is also working with her goddaughter, Boco Haft, on a comedy podcast that stars well-known actors, such as Jake Gyllenhaal and Adam Sandler’s 11-year-old daughter, Sunny.

“We recorded under desks, Jake was in a closet, I mean, it was funky. I took outdoor cushions and made a little cave,” Curtis said of the recording process of “Letters From Camp,” the podcast series.

Curtis also had another podcast that she worked on during the pandemic: “Good Friend.” As its name suggests, the show revolves around Curtis speaking to prominent individuals about friendship. “Good Friend” is set to premiere on iHeartRadio in the near future.

“And that's just the beginning of that creative work,” Curtis told AARP. “Things are up and running and really fun."

“Halloween” fans will also be happy to hear that the actress has two upcoming releases as part of the horror film franchise — “Halloween Kills,” set for release in October 2021, and “Halloween Ends,” which is slated for October 2022.
