Jamie Lee Curtis Reveals Her Favorite Job Ever & It Has Nothing to Do With Her Biggest Roles

Jamie Lee Curtis has an Oscar. She has the "Halloween" franchise, "True Lies," "Freaky Friday," "Knives Out," and "Everything Everywhere All at Once." She has prestige television in "The Bear" and "Scarpetta." She has nearly 100 acting credits across five decades. And when asked, in 2026, what her favorite job has ever been, she did not name any of them.

"My favorite job ever was a sitcom I did back in the day called 'Anything but Love' with Richard Lewis," Curtis, born Nov. 22, 1958, told Mariska Hargitay in a 2026 interview. "It was fantastic." She expanded in a separate conversation with NBC Universal's Backlot Pass: "I'm 67 years old, and every single year, all I've ever said to my agents is, 'I want to do a sitcom. All I want to do is a sitcom.' It's my favorite job."

"Anything but Love" ran on ABC from 1989 to 1992. It starred Curtis as Hannah Miller and the late comedian Richard Lewis as Marty Gold — two colleagues at a Chicago magazine navigating will-they-won't-they romantic tension across four seasons. Curtis has described it as the first time she ever worked in front of a live audience, a format she fell in love with and has been trying to return to ever since.

The path to the show was not straightforward. A pilot was shot and ABC initially passed — leaving Curtis "so bummed out." Then "A Fish Called Wanda" became a hit, ABC reconsidered, and the show was greenlit. Lewis died in March 2024. Curtis has been talking about the show ever since.

Her new sitcom "Newlyweds" is, in some ways, the answer to 35 years of asking her agents for exactly this.

Curtis has described what she loves about the multi-camera sitcom format with a specificity that makes clear this is not a casual preference. "I love the whole part of it. Every aspect of it," she told Backlot Pass. "The dance with the cameras, the idea that you actually get to rehearse something and work it and learn a joke and play it, and I just never got to do it."

John Ritter — best known as Jack Tripper on "Three's Company" — was one of the producers of "Anything but Love," and Curtis has spoken about him with consistent affection. "John Ritter was one of the producers of the show. I loved him." Ritter died in September 2003 at the age of 54. Lewis died in March 2024 at the age of 76. Two of the people most central to Curtis's favorite professional experience are gone. The show itself is not widely available on streaming.

"Newlyweds," the sitcom Curtis co-created with writer Gail Lerner, stars Tim Daly and Téa Leoni as a couple who get married for the wrong reasons and spend a season figuring out whether there are any right ones. Curtis appears in a recurring guest role. It represents the first time in more than three decades that she has been back in a multi-camera sitcom with a live audience. "I just decided to basically kind of create my own job," she said of how it came together.

Thirty-five years of telling her agents the same thing. One new show. The favorite job is back.
